CSUN Travels to Cal Poly for Saturday Night Match Up

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (6-11, 1-0 Big West) hits the road for the first time in conference play when it visits Cal Poly on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game will stream live on BigWest.TV while Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health at 6:50 p.m.
The Matadors completed a 3-0 homestand with a Big West Conference-opening win over Long Beach State on Wednesday at The Matadome by a 95-77 margin. CSUN broke open a 71-65 game and outscored the Beach 24-12 over the final 11 minutes. The Matadors shot a season-high 59.3 percent from the field and made 20-of-26 from the free throw line (76.9 percent).
Sophomore Lamine Diane posted his 23rd career double-double in the win over the Beach, finishing with 33 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Diane made 11-of-18 from the field while he converted on 11-of-16 from the free throw line. Junior Terrell Gomez added 21 points in 38 minutes of action and sophomore Elijah Harkless just missed a double-double as he tallied 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Darius Brown II chipped in with 10 points and five assists.
Gomez, who already broke Josh Greene's all-time career 3-point record earlier this season, is looking to chase down another of Greene's records on Saturday night. With 31-straight free throws made, Gomez is only three away from breaking Greene's record of 33 he set during the 2012-13 season. Gomez is a fixture on the school's career record book as he is first in 3-point field goals made (242), sixth in points (1,364) and 10th in minutes played (2,927) and field goals made (456).
In the Big West, Gomez continues to lead the league in points per game (21.2), minutes per game (36.6), free throw percentage (93.7), field goals made (212) and 3-point field goals made (60). Harkless is atop the conference in steals per game (2.2) and defensive rebounds per game (5.7) while he is ranked second in overall rebounds per game (6.9) and eighth in assists per game (3.5). Brown II is also second in the league in assists per game (4.6) and assists to turnover ratio (3.2). After scoring above 90 points over the last three games, CSUN is now leading the Big West in points per game at 75.9.
Although he has not played enough games to qualify to lead the Big West in scoring, Diane is averaging a robust 31.3 points per game on 51.2 percent shooting. Diane is also grabbing 12.3 rebounds while dishing out 2.8 assists per game. The Matadors are 3-1 in games he has played in and have averaged 86.3 points per game.
CSUN and Cal Poly will face off for the 105th time in men's basketball on Saturday night. The Mustangs own a narrow 54-49 edge but CSUN has won three of the last four meetings. The Matadors swept the season series in 2018-19 including winning 78-74 in overtime at Mott Athletics Center. Gomez had a team-high 23 points in 43 minutes of action in the win while Diane added 20 points and 15 rebounds. Three of the last four meetings between the two teams in San Luis Obispo have gone to overtime with CSUN winning in 2016 and 2019.
A Closer Look at Cal Poly
The Mustangs fell to 3-12 on the season after a conference-opening loss to UC Santa Barbara (63-45) at home on Wednesday. Freshman Colby Rogers led the Mustangs with 16 points in defeat. Cal Poly's three wins this season have come against Simpson, Siena and Vanguard. At Mott Athletics Center, Cal Poly is 3-3 on the year. Head coach John Smith is in his first season at the helm of the Mustangs.
Sophomore Junior Ballard leads the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game to go with 3.0 rebounds. Graduate Malek Harwell is averaging 9.1 points and shooting 41.2 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. On the glass, freshman Kyle Colvin is averaging a team-high 4.7 rebounds while he is scoring 8.1 points per game. As a team, Cal Poly is averaging 62.5 points.
