Matadors Visit UC Riverside, Host UC Davis on ESPN3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (6-12, 1-1 Big West) completes a two-game road swing at UC Riverside on Thursday at 7 p.m. before hosting UC Davis on Saturday at 3 p.m. BigWest.TV will have coverage of Thursday's game while Saturday's game streams live on ESPN3. The Matadors suffered a 74-56 setback at Cal Poly last Thursday to fall to 1-1 in league play. CSUN struggled from the field throughout the night, shooting 35.8 percent while the Mustangs shot 52.7 percent from the field. The Matadors trailed just by a 32-25 margin at the half but Cal Poly began the second half on a 13-2 run and never looked back.
Junior Terrell Gomez carried the load offensively, scoring 18 points to go with four assists and three rebounds while sophomore Lamine Diane added 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out in 26 minutes of action.
Gomez broke yet another Matador record on Saturday night after going 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The 5-8 junior has now made the most free throws in a row in team history with 39 straight. The previous mark was held by Josh Greene who made 33 in a row in 2012-13. Earlier this season, Gomez broke Greene's career 3-point field goals made record, which stood since 2014. Gomez, who has made 244 career 3-pointers, is sixth in team history in points (1,382) and 10th in minutes (2,967) and field goals made (460).
On the national leaderboard, Gomez remains to be in the Top 20 in several categories including ranking fourth in 3-point percentage (94.4), fifth in 3-point field goals made (62), seventh in points (379) and 15th in points per game (21.1). Darius Brown II is currently eighth in the nation in assists to turnover ratio (3.1) while Elijah Harkless is 23rd in steals (38).
In the Big West, Gomez is first in the league in points per game, minutes per game (36.8), free throw percentage, field goals made (125) and 3-point field goals made while he is 10th in 3-point percentage (39.2). Harkless leads the Big West in steals per game (2.1) and defensive rebounds per game (5.5) and comes in fourth in rebounds per game (6.7) and eighth in assists per game (3.3). Brown II is ranked second in assists per game (4.5) and assists to turnover ratio. Although he has played enough games to qualify to rank on the Big West leaderboard, Diane is averaging 27.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.4 steals and 2.4 blocks through five games.
The Matadors are 44-36 all-time against UC Riverside and come in winners of six of the last seven meetings. CSUN swept the season series last season but won both games by a combined three points. Gomez averaged 28.0 points and made 10-of-20 from 3-point range in the two wins, highlighted by a 32-point effort at UC Riverside. The Matadors have won the last four games at the SRC Arena going back to Feb. 2016.
UC Davis holds a 22-20 edge over CSUN in the head-to-head series. The teams held serve at home last season with CSUN pulling off an 81-76 win at The Matadome last February. The win over the Aggies last season snapped an 11-game losing streak in the series and was the first win since 2014. Diane averaged 27.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the two games in 2018-19 including a 35-point, 11-rebound performance in the win.
A Closer Look at UC Riverside
The Highlanders are off to a 2-0 start to league play after defeating UC Davis and Cal State Fullerton both by a 65-59 margin last week. UC Riverside comes in at 12-6 this season and has already posted its most wins since 2015-16. The team is also an impressive 8-1 at the SRC Arena, with its only blemish coming against Northern Arizona on Dec. 19. The Highlanders are 12th in the nation in scoring defense (59.3) and 26th in rebounding margin (7.2).
A transfer from Washington State, junior Arinze Chidom has seen action in seven games but leads the squad with 12.1 points and 8.0 rebounds. Sophomore Callum McRae is currently ranked sixth in the Big West in rebounds per game with 6.5 while he scores 9.1 points per game. Transferring in from UTSA, junior George Willborn III has also been a key contributor on the year, averaging 8.1 points and 5.4 rebounds.
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The Aggies are 6-11 overall and 0-1 in Big West play. After falling to UC Riverside, 65-59, last Thursday, the Aggies travel to Long Beach State on Thursday. UC Davis is 1-8 in road games on the year, with its only win coming at Northern Arizona on Dec. 4. The team leads the Big West in 3-point percentage (36.3) and free throw percentage (77.3).
Senior Joe Mooney is fourth in the Big West in scoring with 15.2 points per game to go with 3.5 rebounds. Also averaging in double figures, freshman Ezra Manjon is scoring 10.7 points while senior Matt Neufeld is averaging 10.1 points. Freshman Elijah Pepper leads the team on the glass, grabbing a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game (ninth in the Big West) to go with 6.8 points per game.
