PHOTOS: CSUN Baseball Celebrates 1970 Championship Team at Alumni Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball hosted its annual Alumni Weekend from Jan. 24-25, celebrating the 1970 San Fernando Valley State Division II championship team and other Matadors from yesteryear.
After a special gathering with the 1970 team on Jan. 24, the Matadors took on members of their alumni class in the annual Alumni Game at Matador Field this past Saturday. The 2020 squad was victorious 6-0 behind two-run home runs from seniors Jayson Newman and Blake Doremus. Senior Daniel Vasquez hurled three shutout frames, allowing one hit before sophomore Blaine Traxel worked three clean innings of his own to go with four strikeouts. On the alumni side, recent alums Alvaro Rubalcaba (2017-18), Fred Smith (2016-17), Tei Vanderford (2017-18), Kevin Riley (2017-18), Elias Orona (2015-17), Joey Cooper (2018-19) and Hayden Shenefield (2018) all returned to the diamond once more at Matador Field in the game.
The Matadors celebrated their alumni class and the 1970 San Fernando Valley State team on its 50th anniversary since winning the Division II national championship at the Alumni Dinner held at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. The voice of Matador baseball Ross Porter emceed the event while members of the 1970 team shared memories of their special championship run. Former head coach Bob Hiegert was on hand at the event along with 80 percent of the championship squad.
"Honoring the 1970 team's national championship and their success was special for our program," said head coach Dave Serrano. "You could feel the synergy and love that team had, led by their coach Bob Hiegert. With the team losing four members due to them passing away and still having 80 percent of the team in attendance showed the closeness that team shared. Hearing the stories the members of that team shared was enlightening to all who attended. Thank you to that team for setting a standard 50 years ago for this year's team and others to follow."
CSUN opens up its 62nd season on Friday, Feb. 14 against San Francisco at Matador Field.
