CSUN Comes From Behind To Defeat Hawai'i 58-54 In Big West Opener
1/9/2020 10:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to defeat Hawai'i 58-54 in the Big West Conference women's basketball opener for both squads Thursday night in The Matadome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UH used a pair of scoring runs to take a 21-9 lead early in the second quarter. The first was a 7-0 spurt early in the first quarter. The Rainbow Wahine closed the first-period outscoring CSUN 9-0. The second run would end up being 11-2 and result in a 12-point advantage.
- Down 23-13, the Matadors responded with nine straight points. This would be the first of two occasions in which CSUN reduced the lead to two. Leading 28-26, Hawai'i scored the final four points of the first half to take a six-point lead into halftime.
- Hawai'i led by as many as six in the third quarter. Trailing 40-35 midway through the third, a Matador rally resulted in a tied game at 41 when De'Jionae Calloway converted a three-point play. The Matadors took their first lead since the score was 2-0 when Jordyn Jackson made a fast-break layup in the paint at the 1:28 mark. A pair of Julissa Tago free throws with 12 seconds remaining in the third sent the game into the final period tied at 43.
- The teams exchanged baskets to begin the fourth. A Jackson three-pointer with 7:37 to play boosted CSUN into the lead. Tago tied the game on the ensuing Hawai'i possession with a three-pointer. Deja Williams' three-pointer at the 4:25 mark would put CSUN ahead for good. Myrrah Joseph's short jumper a little under a minute later would make the score 53-52 and the closest the Rainbow Wahine would get down the stretch.
- Meghann Henderson's basket at 3:09 was followed by a pair of Williams' free throws to get the lead up to six. The final points of the game would be scored by Joseph. Her layup with 1:13 remaining made it the final 58-54. Williams was fouled twice in the final minute, but she missed all four of her free-throw attempts, keeping UH's hopes alive. Tago missed a pair of field-goal attempts in the final 21 seconds as the Matadors won their fourth consecutive Big West Conference opener.
- The Matadors shot 9-of-40 in the first half as the Rainbow Wahine were 10-of-20 from the field during the first 20 minutes. CSUN made eight steals in the first half, forcing 14 turnovers. The Matadors would score 10 points off of those turnovers. CSUN was 12-of-25 from the floor in the second half as Hawai'i missed 19-of-27 field goal attempts.
- Calloway led all scorers with 22 points and she recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 12 rebounds. She also added three blocks as she was 10-of-20 from the floor. Henderson scored 13 points and tied her career-high with nine rebounds. The 5-10 guard also dished out a game-high six assists. Williams would score 10 points, record two assists, and made two steals. Joseph led UH (6-8) with 11 points. Tago had 10.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "It wasn't always pretty, but it was a good basketball game. They came out and hit us in the mouth early on. We responded and showed some toughness. You get a two-possession at the end of it. It was a gutsy performance by our kids for several reasons. If you saw us early in the season, the one thing that bugged me the most was that we lacked toughness. For us to come out and find a way to win was impressive."
