HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Matadors scored the first eight points of the game and led 11-3 when the Anteaters took a timeout 3:45 into the first period. After making 4-of-5 three-point attempts in the first quarter, the Matadors were 4-of-6 from long range in the second. UCI was 5-of-14 from three-point range in the first half, keeping the Anteaters within striking distance as CSUN led 36-31 at halftime.
- Meghann Henderson and Jordyn Jackson combined for 23 of the Matadors' 36 points in the first half. The duo both made 3-of-4 three-point attempts during the opening 20 minutes.
- CSUN started strong once again, scoring seven straight out of halftime, forcing UC Irvine to call timeout, trailing by 10, 43-33, a little over two minutes into the third period. Hayley Tanabe scored all seven of her points in the game during the third quarter as the Matadors would take a 57-47 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
- CSUN posted the first five points of the final period to take their largest lead of the game to that point, 62-47. UCI chipped away, closing the gap to 68-60 at the 1:45 mark when Alexus Seaton recorded a layup. The Anteaters got a defensive stop and had two chances on the offensive end. Seaton missed a jumper in the paint. Sophia Locandro got the rebound and passed the ball to Lauren Saiki who missed a three-pointer. Deja Williams grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
- UC Irvine quickly fouled the Matadors to force CSUN to the free throw line. Henderson was fouled, resulting in the bonus for the Matadors. She made 1-of-2 to make it 69-60. After a UCI miss, Jackson pulled in a rebound and was fouled. She was 1-of-2 from the line for a 10-point lead. Seaton's free throws with 11 seconds remaining were the final points of the night, resulting in the eight-point victory for the Matadors.
- This is only the third time since CSUN joined the Big West in 2001 that the Matadors are 2-0 to begin the league slate. In 2012-13, CSUN would go 4-0 to begin league play. In 2004-05, the Matadors won their first three Big West Games.
- Saturday's victory was the fourth in a row for the Matadors and is the first time CSUN has won four in a row since the Matadors won all four games of the 2018 Big West Tournament, resulting in CSUN's third conference tournament title.
- Jackson led all scorers with 19 points. The sophomore guard was 7-of-12 from the field and would end up 4-of-6 from three-point range. She added three assists and three steals. De'Jionae Calloway charted her second consecutive double-double and her sixth of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The 6-0 forward tallied two assists and two steals. Henderson ended the game with 13 points, six assists, and two steals.
- The Matadors limited the Anteaters to 34.5% shooting (20-of-58) while going 42.2% from outside (27-of-64). CSUN scored 21 points off of 14 UCI turnovers and made 11 steals. UC Irvine (4-11, 0-1 Big West) was paced by Haleigh Talbert who scored 13 points. Saiki had 12 while Seaton registered 10.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "Our guards played well throughout the game. Our assist-to-basket ratio has gone up and we are doing a much better job of moving the basketball. As a result, we are getting things we want on the offensive end. Defensively, we were good again, but we fouled way too much. We will try and get better and prepare for Cal State Fullerton."
