NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN interim women's basketball coach Lindsey Foster has announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent to continue their playing career for the Matadors.
"McKenzie, Macy, and Kayanna are all highly skilled players who come from wonderful families and epitomize all of the high character traits that make our program's culture so special," said Foster.
McKenzie Hudgen comes to Northridge from Marian High School in Mishawaka, Ind. Hudgen is a 5-8 guard who averaged 12.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 3.2 steals per game as a junior. After leading Marian to a 22-6 record in 2019-20, Hudgen was named honorable mention All-Conference and honorable mention All-State. Hudgen began her senior season with a chance for 1,000 points on the prep level as she has scored 781 points during her prep career. She carries a 4.23-grade point average and is an honors student.
"McKenzie is a very tough athlete and a high IQ guard who is truly a complete player," Foster said. "She is a tenacious competitor, a three-level scorer, dynamic passer, and a tough, hard-nosed defender. She has had the benefit of playing against a high level of competition through both her Indiana Flight club team and Marian High School team most of her career and it shows. As impressive as her basketball skills are, McKenzie is a genuine, fun, high-character young woman who fits our culture. We could not be more excited about who McKenzie is and what she and her family will bring to our Matador family."
"McKenzie Hudgens is arguably the toughest player in the state of Indiana," said Richard Wright, Hudgens' coach with the Indiana Flight Club. "McKenzie plays both sides of the ball and can score at all three levels. She is a student of the game and is a great addition for CSUN."
Macy Smith travels to CSUN from Spring Lake Park High School in Minn. Entering her senior season, Smith has led her teams to three state tournament appearances and two conference titles. A two-time All-Conference selection, she averaged 11.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a junior. She has already scored 1,000 points in her prep career. She is ranked No. 45 by Minnesota Prep Girls in the Class of 2021 and No. 57 by the Minnesota Junior All-Star in the Class of 2021.
"The moment we saw Macy play, we began recruiting her immediately," said Foster. "We loved not just her skillset, but her competitiveness and athleticism. Matador fans are going to love her versatility, especially her 3-point shot. Her great perimeter skills, high basketball IQ, and her relentless work ethic are exciting beyond words. We are so thrilled to welcome Macy and her family into our Matador family."
"Macy is an exceptional athlete who loves everything about basketball," said Sam Ebenriter, Smith's coach with the Minnesota Fury Club. "She's not just there for the games or the attention but relishes the whole process; practices, working on her game on her own when nobody is watching, spending time with teammates and coaches, and everything that goes into making a player great. She's a flame thrower from beyond the arc and the kind of intense competitor who teammates gravitate towards and feed off of. She's intelligent, works hard, and treats teammates, coaches, and those outside the program with respect. She's the complete package that anybody would want representing their program on and off the court."
Kayanna Spriggs has signed with the Matadors and will be graduating from Mater Dei Catholic High School in Chula Vista in 2021. A 6-3 forward, Spriggs averaged 15.1 points and 12.7 rebounds per game as a junior. Spriggs was named second-team All-CIF, and second-team CalHiSports.com All-State a year ago.
"The first time we watched Kayanna play, we knew she would make an outstanding Matador," Foster said. "I saw a six-foot-three athletic forward who has a very high ceiling. While our staff is extremely excited about Kayanna's readiness to come to campus and work hard both on and off the court, we love her fun-loving personality. It will not be long until Matador Nation knows and loves Kayanna, as well. We are excited to welcome Kayanna and her family to our Matador family."
"Kayanna's athleticism, hard work, and dedication to her game will be a great addition to the CSUN Women's Basketball program," said David Monroe, head coach of Mater Dei Catholic High School. "Also, we will miss her bright smile and great personality she brought to our Mater Dei Catholic Women's Basketball program during her tenure as a Lady Crusader."
"McKenzie, Macy, and Kayanna are all highly skilled players who come from wonderful families and epitomize all of the high character traits that make our program's culture so special," said Foster.
