CSUN Travels To Stockton For Libby Matson Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- CSUN travels to the Libby Matson Tournament, hosted by the University of the Pacific this weekend.

The Matadors open the tournament Friday at 1 p.m. when CSUN faces Seattle University. The day concludes against the host Tigers at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday's action gets underway at 12:15 p.m. against CSU Bakersfield before wrapping up at 2:30 p.m. against Nevada. The tournament concludes Sunday at 10:15 a.m. against CSU Bakersfield. Â

Seattle U dropped all five games the Redhawks played at the Kajikawa Classic last week. SU plays a doubleheader at Stanford on Thursday before traveling to Stockton. Stephanie Merwin went 4-for-9 (.444) at ASU to lead the Redhawks. Madison Cathcart hit a pair of home runs during the tournament. Shi Smith struck out 18 in 11.1 innings during four tournament appearances. This will be the ninth time that CSUN and SU are playing softball. The Matadors lead the all-time series 6-2.

Pacific went 3-1 at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Classic last weekend including a 5-1 victory over the host Titans. Hanna Krosky was 6-of-10 at the plate with two RBI for the Tigers. Myka Sutherlin was 2-0 in the circle for Pacific, striking out 12 in 13 innings. A former Big West foe, CSUN is playing Pacific for the 66th time. The Matadors have won six in a row and lead the all-time series 39-26.

CSU Bakersfield struggled at UCLA's Stacy Weinberg Tournament last weekend, going 0-5, and being outscored 44-8 during the tournament. Samantha Martinez hit .455 with two home runs and four RBI during the tournament. Cydney Curran hit .400 last weekend for the Roadrunners. The 'Runners join the Big West next season, playing in the same league with CSUN for the first time since both were members of the CCAA. This is the 64th time that CSUN and CSUB are playing softball with the Matadors leading the all-time series 46-17.

Nevada went 0-5 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, losing to No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 21 Oregon along the way. Sierro Mello hit .467 during the tournament. Blake Craft was a tough-luck pitching loser for Nevada during the tournament. She was 0-3, but her ERA was 1.85. This will be the 14th meeting between CSUN and Nevada with the Matadors leading the all-time series 11-2.

CSUN opened the season by going 3-2 at the UNLV Rebel Classic. Jessica Alexander hit .500 with two home runs and 6 RBI to lead the Matadors offense. Kenedee Jamerson went 2-1 with one save in 19.2 innings in the circle for CSUN.

The 11-3 CSUN victory against Southern Utah Feb. 8 pushed Tairia Flowers into second-place in CSUN history with her 246th. The win moved Flowers past Janet Sherman (245, 1995-2001) into sole possession of the position. Gary Torgeson (1982-94) is the all-time wins leader at CSUN with 636.

With a pair of victories against Southern Utah Feb. 7-8, CSUN improved to 29-0 lifetime against the Thunderbirds. The Feb. 8 11-3 victory was the 11th time that the Matadors invoked the 8-run mercy rule against SU.
