Matadors Lose Shootout with UC Davis
2/15/2020 8:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAVIS, Calif.---Five Matadors scored in double figures but it would not be enough as CSUN Men's Basketball (11-16, 6-5 Big West) dropped a 110-98 decision at UC Davis (12-16, 6-5 Big West) on Saturday at the Pavilion. Sophomore Lamine Diane scored a game-high 30 points and added six assists while junior Gomez made four 3-pointers en route to finishing with 26 points. Junior Lance Coleman II scored 14 points off the bench and sophomores Darius Brown II and Elijah Harkless each chipped in with 12 points. Despite shooting over 65 percent in the second half, the Matadors could not cool off the hot-shooting Aggies down the stretch.
CSUN finished shooting 58.9 percent from the field for the game and made 10-of-19 from 3-point range (52.6 percent). The Matadors also earned their way to the line with regularity, making 22-of-30 (73.3 percent). However, the Aggies matched the Matadors shot-for-shot as they finished with a red-hot 59.3 shooting percentage from the field while they hit 15-of-25 from 3-point range (60.0 percent). UC Davis also converted on 25-of-26 free throws (96.2 percent). The Aggies out-rebounded the Matadors 31-22 and had an impressive 65-18 edge in bench points.
FIRST HALF
Diane scored five early points to help give CSUN a 7-3 lead in the opening minutes. Festus Ndumanya scored four-straight Matador points to keep his team ahead but the Aggies took the lead on a Joe Mooney 3-pointer. Following a Brown II jumper, the Matadors went cold for three minutes, which gave the Aggies a chance to surge ahead. The Aggies hit four of five shots during that stretch to quickly build a nine-point lead. Mooney stroked another 3-pointer at the 6:14 mark to push the Aggie advantage to double-digits (29-17).
CSUN chipped away at the lead in the closing minutes of the half as Diane and Gomez scored the next seven Matador points. Coleman II knocked down a long-range jumper to cut the deficit to 32-27 with 4:19 on the clock. The teams traded long-range shots as Stefan Gonzalez dialed up a four-point play before Coleman II drained another 3-pointer. Gonzalez stroked yet another 3-pointer with under a minute to play, making it an eight-point game. Coleman II would beat the halftime buzzer with a triple to bring the Matadors within 47-41 at the break.
SECOND HALF
After each team shot above 50 percent in the first half, both sides eclipsed that effort with over 60 percent shooting in the second half. The Matadors trimmed the deficit to three early in the half on a 3-pointer from Gomez (51-48) but the Aggies went on a 9-3 spurt to build the lead back up to 60-51. CSUN answered with a 7-0 run of its own, capped by a long-range triple from Gomez, making it a 60-58 game. UC Davis though responded in kind with six-straight points.
The Aggies would make six-straight shots near the midway mark of the second half, which was capped by a Mooney 3-pointer. Mooney sank one more triple and Rogers Printup followed with a trey of his own to quickly push the lead to 83-68. The Matadors converted on five-straight shots as well but could not make a dent into the lead as the Aggies responded time after time with key shots.
Later in the half, the Matadors pulled to within 96-88 on a 3-pointer from Brown II, forcing an Aggie timeout with three minutes to play. Out of the timeout, UC Davis picked up a timely basket from Gonzalez to go back up 10. Printup converted on a driving layup that made it a 102-90 game with two minutes on the clock. The Aggies went 8-of-8 at the free throw line as well in the final 2:32 to hold off CSUN.
GAME NOTES
Gomez pushed his career scoring tally to 1,551 points to move into fifth place on the Matadors' all-time career scoring list, ahead of Josh Greene (2010-14). Ian Boylan (2011-15) sits in fourth place on the points list with 1,610.
Diane finished 11-of-16 from the field while Brown II and Coleman II each went 5-of-6 from the floor. Harkless added six assists and three rebounds for the Matadors.
For the Aggies, Mooney made 7-of-9 from 3-point range and finished with 29 points.
