Hot-Shooting UC Irvine Defeats CSUN
2/22/2020 9:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (11-17, 6-6 Big West) dropped an 87-64 decision to first-place UC Irvine (19-10, 11-2 Big West) on Saturday at The Matadome. Sophomore Elijah Harkless led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting while sophomore Lamine Diane finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. The Anteaters broke open a 10-point game at the half, outscoring the Matadors 42-29 over the final 20 minutes.
CSUN was held to 40.7 percent shooting while the Matadors only converted on 6-of-17 from 3-point range (35.3 percent). In contrast, the Anteaters knocked down 55.4 percent of their shots and made 14-of-22 from downtown (63.6 percent). UCI dominated the glass, out-rebounding CSUN 39-26. Points in the paint also went the Anteaters way at 36-22.
FIRST HALF
Diane got the Matadors started on the right foot with a basket to open the game but 2-0 would be CSUN's only lead in the contest. The Anteaters went on an early 7-0 run, capped by a layup from John Edgar Jr. to lead 11-4. Out of a timeout, Harkless drilled a 3-pointer before Festus Ndumanya knocked down a jumper to pull the Matadors within 11-9. UCI would respond with another 7-0 spurt to put the Matadors in a nine-point hole (18-9). Harkless helped keep the Matadors in the game with outside shooting as he made two-straight 3-pointers to trim the deficit to three points.
CSUN continued to keep chipping away at the lead until a Darius Brown II trey tied the game at 22-22 with 8:56 to play. However, the final eight minutes of the half belonged to the Anteaters with UCI outscoring CSUN 20-10 to close the period. Brad Greene converted on a jumper in the lane to push the lead to 32-25 then 3-pointers from Isaiah Lee and Collin Welp made it a double-digit deficit for the Matadors. After Diane cut the UCI lead to seven with under two minutes to play, Evan Leonard stroked a late 3-pointer to give the Anteaters a 45-35 lead at the break.
SECOND HALF
The 3-point shot continued to fall for the Anteaters in the second half as the lead grew over 20 points. Edgar Jr. made two 3-pointers and Leonard hit three straight from downtown to quickly put the Matadors behind 63-40. CSUN closed the gap to 20 points after a Terrell Gomez jumper before the Anteaters scored the next five points. The lead grew as large as 79-49 after an Edgar Jr. basket in transition with 6:53 on the clock.
Diane kept on battling in the paint, scoring six-straight CSUN points before Jared Pearre converted on short jumper but the Matadors still looked up at a sizeable deficit in the closing minutes. Austin Johnson punctuated the Anteater win with a late dunk.
GAME NOTES
Diane moved into CSUN's all-time career Top 10 in field goals made with 475. The 6-8 forward also climbed into 13th place on the career scoring list with 1,197 points.
Harkless set a new career-high in 3-point field goals made with four (on seven attempts). Gomez finished with nine points while Brown II and Ndumanya chipped in with five points apiece.
For UC Irvine, Leonard scored a team-high 18 points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"It was a frustrating night. They played well and out-played us in every facet of the game. There wasn't anything I thought we were better than them so you have to give them credit - they played terrific. I think for us we got down a little bit and we kind of fell apart. We didn't have patience offensively. We tried to rush shots and now quick shots are leading to run outs. It's like the bottom fell out. That's disappointing, we've got to be a lot better than that. We've always talked to our players about playing through everything. I thought tonight we didn't do that. We've pretty much done that every night."
