CSUN Opens GCU Purple Classic With A Pair Of Extra-Inning Wins

PHOENIX—CSUN won a pair of extra-inning games to begin the GCU Purple Classic Friday afternoon.
GAME 1
CSUN defeated Drake 7-4 in eight innings to get the day underway.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a CSUN error in the bottom of the first to score an unearned run. Jaymi Steward tied the score in the top of the second when she drove in Megan Stevens with a single up the middle.
The Matadors scored three times in the top of the third. A Stevens double plated Jessica Alexander and Kira Cauley. Steward singled in Stevens later in the inning. Drake got two back in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Libby Ryan's single scored two runs. The Bulldogs put runners on second and third with one out.
Kenedee Jamerson, the CSUN pitcher, pulled off an unassisted double play when she caught Emily Valtman's line shot up the middle and tagged Macy Johnson out on the play.
CSUN left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth. Drake tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Mandi Roemmich drove in Abby Buie with a single. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs before Stevens, on in relief, struck out Ryan looking for the final out. The Matadors left the bases loaded again in the fifth and entered double-digits in runners left on base with two more in the top of the sixth.
The Matadors regained the lead in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Alexander singled down the left-field line which allowed Aaliyah Swan to score. Stevens followed with a two-run home run to make it 7-4. The Bulldogs put the tying run on at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Johnson grounded out to short to end the gam.e
Stevens was 3-for-4 with her home run, two doubles, four RBI, and three runs scored. She also picked up the win in the circle as she shutout Drake over 4.1 innings of relief. She allowed two hits, struck out three, and walked two.
Alexander went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and her RBI. Steward was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two stolen bases. Cauley went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Roemmich was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Aubree Beitzinger went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Ryan drove in a total of three runs for Drake. CSUN left 11 on base while Drake also left 11 on.
GAME 2
CSUN rallied from three runs down on two occasions to defeat Utah State 8-7 in eight innings in the nightcap.
The Aggies got on the board in the top of the second when Jillian James hit three consecutive batters which resulted in the first run of the game for Utah State. A James walk with the bases loaded forced in the second run. The Aggies capped off the scoring by taking advantage of a wild pitch for the third run. Makenzie MacFarlane extended the lead to 4-0 with a home run in the top of the third.
Savannah Favre's infield single in the bottom of the third scored Journey Rojas to break the seal for the Matadors. Steward cut the lead in half in the fourth with a one-out double that drove in Alyssa Vazquez. Steward stole third and scored on an error to create a 4-3 game.
The Matadors turned an 8-4 double play in the top of the fifth with runnres on first and second to keep the Aggies at bay. Stevens tied the score in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that drove in Favre.
Kennedy Hira led off the Utah State sixth with a double. With one out, Allanah Alvarado doubled in Hira for the go-ahead run. Stephanie Reed singled to put runners on the corners for the Aggies. Riley Plogger's sac fly allowed Alvarado to score, extending the advantage to two. MacFarlane grounded out to get the Matadors out of the inning. CSUN stranded Steward in scoring position in the sixth after she singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Utah State added an unearned run in the top of the seventh. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Stevens tied the game with a three-run home run. The Matadors completed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth. With Steward placed at second, she moved up a base on a Rojas sac bunt. Freshman Jordan Kaeka drove in the game-winning run with a single through the left side.
MacFarland was 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Utah State. Despite not charting a hit, Plogger posted two RBI. Stevens drove in a total of four runs. Cauley, Vazquez, and Steward, each posted two hits.

UP NEXT
Due to impending weather on Saturday in the Phoenix area, the tournament schedule has changed. CSUN (9-3) faces Utah State at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Matadors will face Drake at 10 a.m. and Grand Canyon at 12 p.m.
