2/23/2020 5:18:00 PM | Softball
PHOENIX, Ariz.—CSUN posted a pair of victories Sunday at the GCU Purple Classic to go 4-0 on the weekend and improve to 11-3 overall.
GAME 1
GAME 1
- CSUN defeated Utah State 11-3 to get the day started. The Matadors sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring five times. Jessica Alexander's two-run home run highlighted the scoring outburst. Megan Stevens and Jaymi Steward hit back-to-back home runs to begin the Matador second, increasing the lead to 7-0.
- The Aggies (7-6) loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, but Kenedee Jamerson, making the start for CSUN in the circle, induced a Leah Molina ground out to second to end the inning. Stevens' RBI double in the top of the third drove in Kira Cauley for an 8-0 lead.
- The Aggies broke through in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. After a CSUN error began the inning, Mazie MacFarland's double plated Stephanie Reed. Lexi Orozco followed with a double that drove in MacFarland. Utah State would put runners on the corners with two outs before Jamerson again got a ground out to end the inning.
- Cauley's RBI single in the top of the fourth drove in Jordan Kaeka to push the lead to 9-2. Jamerson issued a lead-off walk to begin the Aggies' fourth. Stevens relieved Jamerson and got the first out. Reed doubled. Riley Plogger singled in Reed for a 9-3 score. MacFarland hit into a 4-6-3 double play to send it to the fifth. Aaliyah Swan and Kiarra Crockett-Pope added RBI's in the top of the fifth to close the scoring for the Matadors.
- CSUN recorded 17 hits, the most by a Matador squad since Apr. 18, 2010 when CSUN tallied 18 hits against Pacific. The 17 hits are the seventh most in a game for Matador team at the Division I level.
- Jamerson and Stevens combined on a six-hitter. Stevens went 3-for-3, with three runs scored and two RBI. Cauley was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Steward was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Swan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Savannah Favre was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- The win was the 1,450th in the history of the CSUN program.
- A five-run fourth inning proved to be the difference as CSUN defeated Grand Canyon 8-4 to close the tournament.
- Olivia Zufelt's two-out RBI single drove in Mickey Covarrubio and gave the 'Lopes a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Alyssa Vazquez tied the game in the top of the second with a double to the right-center gap that scored Swan.
- Kristin Fifield led off the GCU second with a double to right. Savannah Tourville walked. Gianna Nicoletti grounded into a 5-6 fielder's choice, eliminating Fifield as the lead runner. Jillian James struck out Kaylee Dietrich before Covarrubio singled to load the bases. James fielded Jaiden Reid's hopper and threw onto first to get out of the inning.
- CSUN took the lead in the top of the third with a pair of two-out runs. Kendee Jamerson singled to left which allowed Alexander (who doubled to lead off the inning) to score. Jamerson took second on the throw to the plate. Swan followed with single down the left field line that plated Jamerson.
- Alexander drove in a run with a single with one out in the top of the fourth. Alexander's hit chased the 'Lopes' starter Yessie Morrison in favor of Syndie Sahhar. Stevens struck out. Steward's single drove in a pair of runs to make it 6-1 in favor of the Matadors. Jamerson walked. A double steal put two runners in scoring position. Swan tripled down the left field line to score both Steward and Jamerson.
- Kaylee Dietrich's two-out single in the bottom of the sixth drove in the second run of the game for GCU. Reid led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. Lilly Bishop singled up the middle to bring up Zufelt who fouled out. Kaileigh Holland singled to left to load the bases. Fifield popped out to left for the second out. Tourville walked to bring in a run. Nicoletti reached on an infield single that made it 8-4. Dietrich flew out to short to end the game.
- The Matadors' 11-3 start is the best for the club since 2015 when CSUN was also 11-3. It is only the sixth time since CSUN moved to Division I in 1991 that the Matadors have won 10 or more games in the first 14 of a season.
- Stevens was 2-for-4 to finish the weekend 9-of-13 at the plate. Alexander was also 2-for-4 while Swan went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Covarrubio and Nicoletti each had two hits for the 'Lopes (3-12). Both teams had 11 hits in the game. James charted a complete game, striking out six and walked three.
- "The players definitely found different ways to make things happen. It was a team effort and we continue to learn and grow each day."
- CSUN (11-3) heads to the San Diego Classic next weekend. The five-game stint begins Friday at 9 a.m. against the University of North Dakota.
