Matadors Top Long Beach State, Earn Season Sweep
2/26/2020 10:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LONG BEACH, Calif.---Sophomore Lamine Diane scored 23 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to help lift CSUN Men's Basketball (12-17, 7-6 Big West) to a road win over Long Beach State (10-19, 5-8 Big West) on Wednesday at Walter Pyramid. Diane posted his ninth double-double of the season as he also finished with 11 rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Festus Ndumanya scored a career-high 14 points with three rebounds while junior Terrell Gomez and sophomore Darius Brown II chipped in with 14 and 11 points respectively. With the win, the Matadors earned their first season sweep over the Beach since 2017 and just their second victory at Walter Pyramid since 2008.
CSUN finished with a 41.9 shooting percentage while the Beach were held to 37.9 percent shooting for the night. The Matadors made 8-of-23 from 3-point range (34.8 percent) compared to the Beach who made 7-of-17 (41.2 percent). Both teams converted on 13-of-17 from the free throw line (76.5 percent) and each grabbed 38 rebounds in the contest.
Â
FIRST HALF
Both sides struggled offensively at the outset as CSUN made just one of its first eight attempts while the Beach converted on two of their first seven shots. After trailing 4-2 at the first media timeout, CSUN soared with an 11-0 run. Gomez and Brendan Harrick knocked down 3-pointers during the run with the Matadors opening up a 13-4 lead. Ndumanya brought the Matadors energy off the bench, scoring multiple baskets in the paint to finish 5-of-6 in the half. A Ndumanya layup near the midway point of the half extended the lead to 17-8. CSUN would go ahead by double digits for the first time after Elijah Harkless swiped the ball from Joshua Morgan and found Diane for a breakaway dunk.
Â
The Beach would close the gap in the final minutes of the half, eventually pulling within 23-17 on a Romelle Mansel layup. CSUN though responded with an 8-2 run led by Ndumanya and Jared Pearre. After two-straight from Ndyumanya at the free throw line, CSUN led by a 31-19 margin with 1:45 to play. However, in the final seconds, the Beach received timely 3-pointers from Colin Slater and Max De Geest that cut the deficit to 31-25 at the break.
SECOND HALF
Chance Hunter quickly trimmed the CSUN lead even further to four on a layup out of intermission but the Matadors answered with seven-straight points. Brown II made two-straight from the field and then found Gomez on a corner 3-pointer to push the lead to 38-27. The momentum though swung back to the Beach as Long Beach State scored seven of its own to pull within four again (38-34). The seesaw battled continued with the Beach eventually pulling within 47-45 on a jumper from De Geest.
With the lead at two with 9:37 to play, Diane took over the game on the offensive end. He knocked down a 3-pointer then picked off a pass from Slater for a layup on the other end. His jumper at the 7:37 mark extended the CSUN lead to eight. After a Gomez 3-pointer, Diane scored back-to-back buckets to make it a 64-49 game. The Beach made one final push as they cut the lead to single digits with 1:18 on the clock but the Matadors answered on the next possession when Diane found Gomez for a 3-pointer to ice the game.
GAME NOTES
Diane moved into 11th place on the Matadors' all-time career scoring list with 1,225 points while he reached a milestone in career blocks with his 100th rejection. Brown II also caught Brian Heinle (1997-01) for ninth place on the career assist list with 290.
Diane finished 10-of-19 from the floor as well as 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Gomez made 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Harkless chipped in with five rebounds and four assists.
For the Beach, De Geest scored a team-high 11 points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"What I liked was we had a lead, they made a run, which you expect a team to do. We would extend it again then they came back but we were able to push it back. Defensively, we were a lot better. A great bounce-back game for us after the other night. I liked the fact we really tried to execute and run our offense. We were patient, we got good shots and had more poise. We weren't trying to play one-on-one, take it ourselves and play hero basketball. The guys did a great job together so nice win for our group."
UP NEXT
The Matadors return home Saturday night to take on Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. Coverage on BigWest.TV will start at 6:50 p.m. with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call.
