CSUN Faces UC Riverside at The Matadome on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (9-15, 4-4 Big West) opens up the second half of the Big West season on Saturday night against UC Riverside at 7 p.m. inside The Matadome. The game will stream live on BigWest.TV with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call at 6:50 p.m.
The Matadors nearly picked up an impressive road win last Saturday but Hawai'i prevailed in the closing seconds 80-75 in front of a raucous Stan Sheriff Center crowd. CSUN led for 36 minutes in the contest including by a 65-48 margin with 11:06 to play. However, the Rainbow Warriors rallied down the stretch and outscored the Matadors 32-10 to close the game. The Matadors would have a mid-range look by Terrell Gomez to take a one-point lead but the shot went short in the final seconds.
Lamine Diane led all scorers and posted his sixth double-double in 11 games with a 23-point, 11-rebound performance. Elijah Harkless added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists while Gomez scored 13 points.
After eight conference games, the Matadors are in a three-way tie for third place in the Big West standings with UC Riverside (4-4) and UC Santa Barbara (4-4). UC Irvine leads the league with a 7-1 record while Hawai'i is a close second at 5-2. In sixth place is Cal State Fullerton (4-5) followed by UC Davis (3-5) and Cal Poly in seventh (3-5) and Long Beach State in ninth (2-6).
Gomez continues to inch closer up several top 10 lists in the all-time Matador record book. He is sixth in team history in career points with 1,491 and 58 points away from catching Josh Greene (2010-14) for fifth place. With 495 career field goals made, he could move up to as high as fifth place this Saturday with five more made baskets. With two made shots, Gomez will catch George Robnett (1970-74) for sixth place while he will tie Jonathan Heard (2004-08) for fifth place with five made shots. Gomez is the Matadors' all-time leader in career 3-point field goals made (266) while he is eighth in minutes (3,192) and ninth in games started (88).
The Matadors lead the Big West in points per game (75.0) heading into the weekend. CSUN is also topping the league in turnovers per game (12.0) while its second in field goals made per game (27.1) and 3-point percentage (36.6) and third in assists per game (14.0). In league play, the Matadors lead the Big West in several categories including points per game (75.6), field goals made per game (28.0), field goal percentage (48.1), 3-point percentage (40.4) and turnovers per game (10.5).
Individually, Gomez is the Big West leader in points per game (20.3), minutes per game (37.0), free throw percentage (94.4), field goals made (160), 3-point field goals made (84) and free throws made (84). Gomez's numbers are also among the best in the nation as he is first in free throw percentage and fifth in 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goals made per game (3.5). Elijah Harkless leads the Big West in steals per game (1.9) and defensive rebounds per game (5.0) while he is fifth in rebounds per game (6.1). Darius Brown II is first in the conference in assists to turnover ratio (3.1), second in assists per game (4.3) and eighth in field goal percentage (48.1). Although he has not played in enough games to qualify to rank on the Big West leaderboard, Diane is posting 27.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game this season.
In 82 all-time meetings, CSUN leads the series with UC Riverside 45-36. The Matadors have won the last three in the series as well as seven of the last eight meetings. CSUN handed UCR just its second home loss of the season on Jan. 16 with an 80-68 decision. The 80 points the Matadors scored were the second-most by a UCR opponent this season. Diane had an outstanding game against the Highlanders, scoring 36 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals. The teams have split the last four games at The Matadome.
A Closer Look at UC Riverside
The Highlanders (14-10) fell at Cal State Fullerton, 61-48, on Wednesday to slip to 4-4 in Big West play. UCR has dropped three-straight games on the road while its gone 4-8 overall on the year away from the SRC Center. As a team, the Highlanders rank 20th in the nation in scoring defense (61.5) while they are 22nd in rebounding margin (6.8). In the Big West, UCR leads the league in scoring defense and 3-point field goals made per game (8.2) and is second in opponent field goal percentage (41.2) and rebounds per game (36.8).
In 13 games, Arinze Chidom is scoring 11.2 points and grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game. In the middle, Callum McRae ranks sixth in the Big West in field goal percentage (55.2) and rebounds per game (6.0) to go with 8.8 points per game. Averaging 8.2 points, Dikymbe Martin is ninth in the Big West in 3-point percentage (39.4).
