HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first seven CSUN batters reached base in the bottom of the first as the Matadors took a 6-0 lead. Jessica Alexander broke the seal with a two-RBI single. Kiarra Crockett-Pope followed with a single that drove in Megan Stevens
- Freshman Savannah Favre's first at-bat for CSUN was a successful one as she singled in Alexander. Alyssa Vazquez's RBI single plated Crockett-Pope. With the bases loaded, Favre scored on a Southern Utah double play. The Matadors would end up batting around in the inning.
- The Thunderbirds threatened in the top of the second, loading the bases with two outs. Elise Madison, making the start in the circle for CSUN, got Samantha Guerra to ground out to second to end the inning.
- CSUN scored twice in the bottom of the third as Vazquez and Cassidy FitzGerald each drove in a run. Southern Utah came back with two in the top of the fourth. Guerra and Dayna Hokanson each recorded an RBI for the Thunderbirds in the frame.
- The Thunderbirds scored three times with two outs in the sixth. Hokanson struck again, this time with a two-RBI single that was followed by a Mikelle Magalogo triple that drove in Hokanson. Kenedee Jamerson relieved Madison and got the final four outs for the save.
- Kira Cauley, Alexander, Favre, and Vazquez each posted two hits for the Matadors. Hokanson was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk for Southern Utah.
- The victory was the 245th of CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers' career, tying her with Janet Sherman (1995-2001) for the second-most in school history. Gary Torgeson (1982-94) is the all-time winningest coach at CSUN with 636.
- The win marked the 28th in a row for CSUN in the all-time series (28-0) against Southern Utah. After defeating the host 4-3 to begin the day, the Matadors have won two games on the opening day of the season for the first time since 2016.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TIARIA FLOWERS
- "We attacked early and it paid off. I'd like to see us be more consistent throughout the game, but we are finding ways to string things together. I'm proud of how the team handled themselves today."
