CSUN Defeats UNLV 4-3 To Open 2020 Softball Season

LAS VEGAS--CSUN opened the 2020 softball season by defeating UNLV 4-3 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the UNLV Rebel Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jaymi Steward put the Matadors into the lead in the top of the first with a two-run home run. UNLV tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Justine Federe doubled in a pair of runs.
- Kira Cauley drove in Pudi Hernandez with one out in the top of the second to return the lead to the Matadors. CSUN had the bases loaded with one out in the second, but the Rebels' starter Jenny Bressler got Steward to foul out before striking out Megan Stevens to end the inning.
- UNLV put the tying run on second with one out in the bottom of the third. CSUN's Kenedee Jamerson induced a Maddie Schmidt ground out prior to Federe popping out to short to wrap up the inning.
- Jessica Alexander extended the CSUN lead to 4-2 with a two-out solo home run in the top of the fifth.
- With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Schmidt reached on an infield single. Federe lined a shot to Alexander at third. Alexander made the grab and threw back to first to complete the second double play of the game for CSUN.
- Mia Trejo led off the UNLV seventh with a solo home run to cut it to 4-3. Statia Cermak grounded out to third. Samantha Diaz became the potential tying run when she reached on an error and advanced to second.
- Jaclyn Candelas pinch-ran for Diaz as Alyssa Trejo came to the plate. Trejo grounded out to first, but Candelas moved up to third on the play. Pinch-hitter Caitlin Covington pinch- flew out to center to end the game.
- Jamerson tossed a complete game six-hitter. She struck out four and did not walk a batter. Alexander tallied two of the six CSUN hits (2-for-3). Schmidt and Mia Trejo combined for four of the six UNLV hits (two each). Bressler went the distance, striking out eight and walking one.
- "We competed today. We did some things well and answered back when we fell short. Overall I am pleased with how we approached the game."
