Matadors Wrap Up Road Trip at Gonzaga this Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (8-3) concludes its longest road stretch of the season when it visits Gonzaga this weekend for a four-game series. The Matadors open up the series on Friday at 3 p.m. before playing a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The series wraps up on Sunday afternoon at noon. All four games are tentatively scheduled to stream at WCCsports.com/Watch while live stats will be available throughout the weekend.
Probable Pitching Match-Ups
CSUN at Gonzaga - March 6-8
RHP Blake Sodersten (2-1, 4.76 ERA) vs. LHP Mac Lardner (0-2, 2.41 ERA)
RHP Blaine Traxel (2-0, 3.32 ERA) vs. RHP Alek Jacob (1-0, 2.61 ERA)
RHP Gavin Lizik (1-1, 3.97 ERA) vs. RHP Nick Trogrlic-Iverson (0-2, 6.08 ERA)

The Matadors are coming off a four-game series at No. 17 UCF last weekend. CSUN dropped three of four games but held leads in every game in the series. The Knights broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning of game one on Friday, scoring eight runs over a two-inning span to win 12-5. Behind sophomore right-handed pitcher Blaine Traxel, the Matadors evened up the series in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday. Traxel worked a career-high seven innings, allowing two runs to go with seven strikeouts while junior Carlos Arellano homered in a 4-2 triumph. UCF would win the nightcap of the doubleheader by a 10-5 margin and the finale of the series, 6-4.
On the offensive end, Arellano batted .429 (6-of-14) with three runs and two RBI while sophomore outfielder Denzel Clarke stayed hot by hitting .385 (5-for-13) with four runs, three stolen bases and two doubles. Junior right-handed pitcher Blake Schriever earned his third save of the season on Saturday, working two shutout innings, to move into first place in the Big West in saves.
Clarke is hitting .417 (10-for-24) on the Matadors' road trip and is now in second place in the Big West in batting with a .400 average. Senior Jayson Newman is sixth in the league in hitting with a .378 batting average. Clarke is also tied for first in the conference in stolen bases (5) and tied with senior Blake Doremus for second place in home runs (2). On the pitching side, the sophomore trio of Dwayne Angebrandt, Blake Sodersten and Traxel are second in the Big West in wins with two apiece.
Sodersten will take the hill for the fourth-straight Friday against Gonzaga followed by Traxel and freshman right-handed pitcher Gavin Lizik in the doubleheader. The Matadors will name their Sunday starter later in the weekend. Sodersten comes into his fourth start of the year with a team-high 16 strikeouts as he seeks his third win of the year. Traxel has sported a 3.32 ERA and 2-0 record on the year with 12 strikeouts and a save. Lizik (1-1) has a 3.97 ERA over four appearances to go with nine strikeouts.
Following the Matadors' four games in Spokane, Wash., CSUN will play its next four at Matador Field beginning next weekend. The Matadors welcome Iowa for a three-game series, starting on Friday, March. 13. CSUN will also host CSU Bakersfield in a mid-week game on Tuesday, March. 17 before heading back on the road to Santa Clara for a four-game series, beginning on March. 20.
In a series dating back to 1971, CSUN leads the head-to-head matchup with Gonzaga 13-6 entering the weekend. In CSUN's Division I era, the Matadors are 8-1 with all but one of those games played at Matador Field. CSUN is making its first-ever trip to Spokane to play Gonzaga this weekend. Last season, the teams battled in a four-game series at Matador Field, which saw CSUN take three of four games. The Bulldogs took the opener 10-8 in 13 innings but the Matadors won the last three games (3-0, 7-4 and 15-12). Newman enjoyed a big series against Gonzaga last season, hitting .364 with eight hits, eight RBI and two home runs.
A Closer Look at Gonzaga
Gonzaga is 3-8 on the season and is off coming off dropping two of three games at South Alabama last weekend. The team's first 11 games were played away from home, which included a four-game tournament in Surprise, Ariz. and four games at Arkansas. Last season, Gonzaga went 31-24 and finished second in the West Coast Conference. In this season's preseason WCC head coaches poll, Gonzaga was picked to win the conference.
Junior catcher Tyler Rando leads the team with a .361 batting average and 13 hits this season. A preseason All-WCC selection, junior Brett Harris is batting .308 with six RBI while senior Ryan Sullivan has a team-high eight RBI to go with nine runs and a .308 batting average. Junior right-handed pitcher Alek Jacob, a preseason All-American, is sporting a 2.61 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Senior left-hander Mac Lardner has a team-high 25 strikeouts in 18.2 innings with a 2.41 ERA.
