Matadors Fall to Gonzaga in Series Finale
3/8/2020 3:32:00 PM | Baseball
SPOKANE, Wash.---CSUN Baseball (10-5) surrendered three late runs to Gonzaga as the Matadors fell 4-2 in the series finale between the two teams on Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex. Senior Robert Bullard went 2-for-4 with a home run while sophomore Denzel Clarke also went 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Matador bullpen worked the final five innings, allowing a combined three runs on five hits.
The Matadors wrapped up their 11-game road stretch on Sunday, finishing 6-5. In all 11 games, the Matadors had leads in each contest. CSUN also earned a four-game series split with Gonzaga in its first-ever trip to Spokane, Wash.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Senior right-handed pitcher Cruz Daddario earned his second-straight Sunday start. He would have to work his way through a challenging first inning where Gonzaga produced two hits. Daddario gave up a run with one out in the frame when Ryan Sullivan hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Isaac Barrera. After the first, Daddario bounced back with two-straight shutout innings before exiting the game in the fourth.
The Matadors would square the game at 1-1 in the third on a big swing from Bullard. With one out and nobody on base, Bullard hammered a home run on the first pitch from Gonzaga starter Mason Wells.
Both teams traded zeroes in the fourth but CSUN surged ahead in the fifth this time on a timely two-out hit. Chad Call began the inning with a walk before he was sacrificed to second base on a bunt from Kai Moody. Bullard advanced Call to third base on a groundball and Mason Le worked a walk, bringing Clarke to the plate. The sophomore stroked a 1-0 pitch the other way down the right-field line and just fair to plate Call. Le tried to advance home but was thrown out trying to retreat back to third.
The lead appeared as though it might hold up as CSUN reliever Dwayne Angebrandt retired nine of 11 batters to keep the Matadors ahead 2-1 heading to the seventh. However, Gonzaga would capitalize on a CSUN error in the home half of the seventh to tie the game once again. Josh Bristyan reached on an error from short to start the inning then he was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bristyan would steal third before touching home plate on a sacrifice fly from Brett Harris.
The eighth inning would decide the contest as the first four reached base for Gonzaga. In a pivotal play, Stephen Lund reached base with a bunt single and two runners on base. Michael Cartwright entered out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and nobody out and walked Jack Machtolf to force in a run. A fourth run would later come in on a Bristyan flyout.
Down to their final at bat, the Matadors were able to get the tying run to the plate in Bullard with Sean Skelly at first base but Bullard grounded into a 3-6-3 double play to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Clarke finished the four-game series with a .400 batting average at the plate (6-for-15) with three RBI and a home run. Overall on the 11-game road trip, Clarke hit .410 (16-for-39) with 11 runs, nine RBI, four doubles and three home runs. Clarke also extended his on-base streak to 12-straight games while he has a team-high six multiple-hit games on the year.
CSUN's bullpen combined to work 11.0 innings in the four games at Gonzaga and posted a 2.45 ERA. Bullard's home run in the third inning was his fifth of his career and first this season.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"In all four games this weekend it could've gone either way for both teams. I think by the end result of splitting the four-game series, both teams wish they would've done a few things differently and maybe it couldn't been a better outcome. I thought we pitched tremendously well most of the weekend. Today we knew it was going to be a staff day and I was happy about each guy on how they performed. In the eighth, we had a breakdown on a bunt where we didn't get an out and it helped create a big inning that Gonzaga took advantage of.
Offensively, we know we have faced pretty good pitching on this long road trip over three weeks but I believe we can be better in execution and moving the baseball when runners are on base. But as always, it's a work in progress with this team. We have at times shown we can play with anyone and then at times we've given some things away. It's part of the learning process for a team and program working to be better. Finally coming home after three weeks on the road, with extensive travel, some weather conditions and other challenges I would say overall we can be happy but not satisfied being 6-5. We will be glad to get back to Matador Field for a home game next weekend against a good Iowa team."
