NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Following an abbreviated season, the CSUN men's volleyball team had three players honored Monday as the 2020 Big West Men's Volleyball All-Conference Team was announced. Sophomore middle blocker Daniel Wetter was named to the first team while junior Maciej Ptaszynski and redshirt freshman Kyle Hobus were named honorable mention. In addition, Hobus was named Co-Freshman of the Year and was named to the All-Freshman Team.
The Matadors have now had 11 players named All-Big West in three seasons in the conference.
"It's just a testament to where we are as a team right now," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "We're a young team but have talented players who are really working hard at being the best players they can be."
Wetter was the national leader in hitting percentage this season, hitting .528 with 159 kills and just 26 errors on 252 attacks. The redshirt sophomore, who was a Big West All-Freshman Team pick in 2019, also had a team-high 49 blocks while serving a career-high 11 aces in just 15 matches. His total of 159 kills was second only to Hobus among CSUN hitters while his 2.74 kills per set average was also a career-high.
"Wetter had a great year for us," said Campbell. "He's a player that has worked really hard at his craft as both an attacker and a blocker. He was a go-to guy for us all season and really led by example in terms of working as hard or harder than anyone else on the team. Even when we weren't passing the ball well, we still tried to get him the ball and he came through time and time again."
Hobus had a solid first season for the Matadors after redshirting in 2019. He becomes the first CSUN player to earn Freshman of the Year accolades while also being named honorable mention and to the seven-player All-Freshman Team. Hobus led the Matadors and was eighth in the Big West, averaging 3.02 kills per set. He led CSUN with 151 kills while also serving 12 aces to go with 68 digs and 26 total blocks. Hobus is the fourth Matador freshman to earn Big West All-Freshman Team accolades after Ptaszynski (2018), Taylor Ittner and Wetter (2019).
"Kyle really improved this year and I'm definitely proud of the way he played," said Campbell. "He began the season as an outside hitter but moved to opposite because we really needed him there. He's just a great overall volleyball player and took on the biggest offensive load for us this season. He's done a great job of representing CSUN both on and off the court."
Ptaszynski, a junior from Gdansk, Poland, finished the season with 149 kills while averaging 2.57 kills per set. He also led the Matadors with 27 aces (0.47 per set) which wound up leading the Big West. An All-Freshman Team selection in 2018, he also led CSUN with 77 digs (1.33 dps) and added 34 total blocks.
"Maciej was super steady for us all year," said Campbell. "He's played at a high level for a long period of time and came through for us this season in passing, serving and hitting. He just had a solid all-around season for us."
