With the Tokyo Olympics postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, GoMatadors.com takes a moment to look back at CSUN's history at the Olympic Games. In today's Olympic Spotlight, we take a look at five-time Olympic medalist Florence Griffith Joyner.
Â
Florence Griffith Joyner, also known around the world as Flo-Jo, is arguably the most well-known member of the CSUN track and field program to achieve Olympic glory.
Â
After graduating from Los Angeles' Jordan High School with school records in the short sprints and long jump, Griffith Joyner helped CSUN win the 1979 AIAW National Championship - the second of three consecutive AIAW titles for the program.
Â
Griffith Joyner qualified for the finals of the 100m and 200m at the 1980 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. but did not make the Olympic Team.
In 1984, Griffith Joyner made her Olympic debut, taking home the Silver Medal in the 200m at the Los Angeles games.
Â
Griffith Joyner made her mark in 1988. She won Gold Medals in the 100m and 200m during the Seoul Games. Griffith Joyner set the World Record in the 100m (:10.49) at the Olympic Trials before setting the World Record in the 200m (:21.34) during the Olympic Games. She ran the third leg of the USA's 4x100m relay that won the Gold Medal and ran the anchor leg of the USA's 4x400m relay that earned the Silver Medal.
Griffith Joyner was inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1995.
