2025-26 Top CSUN Moments - Track & Field Posts Banner Year in the Discus

From July 6 to August 7, GoMatadors.com will present the top CSUN Moments from the 2025-26 sports season. Today, we celebrate another record-breaking year for the track & field team including sweeping the discus events at the Big West Championships and sending two qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. Â
The 2026 year would be one for the record books for the Matadors, highlighted by an exceptional season in the discus. From sweeping the event at the Big West Championships to setting new school records and sending five total discus qualifiers to regionals and a pair to nationals, the Matadors recorded one of its top years in the discus in school history.Â
A HISTORIC YEAR IN THE DISCUS
After becoming a double champion (discus and hammer throw) at the Big West Championships last season, Summer Mosley put forth a record-breaking 2026 season for the CSUN women's team. Mosley shattered the Matador discus record at the Mt. SAC Relays in April, a record that stood since 1998, before going on to surpass her own record twice more during the season. The senior won three discus competitions, highlighted by winning her second straight discus title at the Big West Championships with a personal-best throw of 59.60m (195-6).Â
Her PR in the discus ranked as the top mark in the west region this season. Mosley would head to the NCAA West First Round, taking fifth place overall to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the first time in her career. In the competitive field, Mosley placed 15th overall at nationals, recording a toss of 54.59m (179-1) to collect second-team All-American honors in her final collegiate meet.Â
On the men's side, Kyriaun Davis made a splash in his first season with the Matador track & field team and a bit of history of his own. Davis would break CSUN's all-time discus record, originally set in 1984, in a first-place finish at the Steve Scott Invitational. Winner of four discus events on the season, Davis surpassed his own record with a PR of 58.41m (191-8) to take the discus crown at the Big West Championships.Â
Davis entered in his first career regional at the NCAA West First Round where he placed ninth overall in the field to advance to nationals. His NCAA Championship berth was the first by a CSUN men's discus athlete in 18 seasons. At nationals, Davis reached 57.26m (187-10) on his final attempt to finish 20th overall in the competition.Â
Overall in the discus, CSUN had three scorers on the women's side and two scorers on the men's side at the 2026 Big West Championships. Senior Katherine Shipp-Davis also reached the podium for the first time in her career, taking second place behind Mosley. At the NCAA West First Round, five Matadors competed in the discus: Mosley, Shipp-Davis, Amani Britton from the women's team and Davis and Isaiah Butler from the men's team.
CSUN TRACK AND FIELD NOTABLES
The Matador track & field teams saw two other all-time records fall during the 2026 year. In the indoor season, CSUN's men's 4x100m relay team of Gabe Martinez, Tibyasa Matovu, Jayden Smith and Walter Pierce reset the record book with a school-best time of 3:10.09 at the MPSF Championships. On the women's team, Lilit Arakelyan would shatter the school record in the 3000m-steeplechase with a time of 10:41.91. In all, CSUN athletes reached the school's all-time top-10 record list 32 times.Â
At the 2026 MPSF Championships, CSUN men's and women's teams combined to reach the podium eight times with three second-place finishes on each side. The 2026 Big West Championships saw the Matadors post podium finishes seven times with the women's side recording four and the men's team tallying three.Â
CSUN also had 10 total qualifiers at the NCAA West First Round this season. Representing the men's team were Isaiah Butler (discus), Tylor Connelly (hammer), James Crawford (100m), Kyriaun Davis (discus), Jay Louison-Roe (triple jump) and Walter Pierce (400m) while the women's team sent Amani Britton (discus), Camryn Harris (triple jump), Summer Mosley (discus) and Katherine Shipp-Davis (discus).Â
