UC Irvine Edges CSUN 2-1
10/23/2021 9:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif.—In a match where all three goals were scored in the final 13 minutes of the match, UC Irvine defeated CSUN 2-1 in Big West Men's Soccer play Saturday night at Anteater Stadium.
Cooper Wenzel, making the start in goal for the Matadors, made a save on a Michael Orozco chip that hung in the air before Wenzel could pull it down in the fourth minute. A little over three minutes later, Jake Means re-directed a pass in front of the CSUN net that was blocked by Matadors out of bounds. UCI couldn't take advantage of the resulting corner kick.
CSUN's first shot on the night came in the 10th minute after a sequence that featured a corner kick and free-kick. The attempt would be taken by Michael Arrington and went wide right. Means again used a re-direct to take a shot towards the CSUN goal. His second attempt in the 14th minute went off the right goal post. Arturo Reveles responded to the ensuing CSUN possession with a blast that was saved by Gordon Botterill.
Following a free-kick, Omar Grey's header went high in the 19th minute. Christian Bond-Flasza went high the next time down for UC Irvine. UCI earned its first corner kick in the 29th minute. Off the set-piece, Beto Alvarenga would go high, resulting in a goal kick for the Matadors. Grey went high again in the 32nd. Ryan Khedoo went high and to the left for the Anteaters on the ensuing possession.
After a CSUN goal kick, UC Irvine stole the ball which would result in Alvarenga taking a shot that was saved in the low center of the goal by Wenzel. Chris Silva's attempt was blocked by UC Irvine's defense with just over three to go in the first half. There would be no score as the teams headed into halftime.
57 seconds into the second half, Giovanni Aguilar's attempt went high and to the left of the UCI goal. Francesco Montanile recorded the first UC Irvine shot of the second half when he went high and to the right in the 50th minute. Botterill saved Grey's third attempt of the night in the low center of the Anteaters' goal two minutes later. Reveles had an opening in the 55th. He dribbled in and from around 15 yards out, his effort went off the right goal post.
The Matadors went down a man in the 57th minute when Alex Lemus received his second yellow of the match (for a tackle) which resulted in a red card. The first attempt with the man advantage was Alvarengo who went wide in the 63rd. The Anteaters' earned a free kick in the 73rd minute. Mathias Winum' header was saved by Wenzel. Due to a foul at 75:35, UCI was awarded a free-kick just outside of the CSUN 18-yard mark. Alverengo delivered a shot that was saved by Wenzel on the low left of his net.
UC Irvine finally broke through in the 79th minute. CSUN failed to clear a cross toward the net. The ball would end up by Khedoo who converted from 18 yards out. UCI continued to press on as Means would go wide right two minutes later. A long Oscar Cervantes pass found Axel Adler in stride. He took two dribbles and scored to make it 2-0.
The Matadors cut the lead in half in the 86th minute. After a scrum in front of the UCI goal, John Andersen scored his first goal since 2018 to make it 2-1 with Giovanni Aguilar getting the assist on the play. Aguilar had a chance to tie a minute later but he would go left. Wenzel made a save on a Lawrence Yamaguchi shot with just a minute to play as time ran out.
"It was a typical Big West game," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "The action was great and it wasn't decided until the end."
UCI outshot CSUN 20-10, 8-3 on goal. The Anteaters had five corner kicks compared to four for the Matadors. Wenzel, a redshirt freshman, made a season-high six saves. Botterill made two saves for UCI.
