UC Irvine Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat CSUN
10/24/2021 7:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---UC Irvine scored five of its six goals in the second half to hand CSUN (3-15, 2-6 Big West) a 6-1 defeat on Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Ashley Cruz netted the Matadors' lone goal of the match and her second of the season. Matador goalkeepers combined to tally three saves.
The Anteaters doubled up the Matadors in shots, 16-8, and led in shots on goal, 9-4. UCI also had six of the 10 corner kicks in the contest. A total of 14 fouls were committed with CSUN whistled for eight.
FIRST HALF
In what would be an even first half, the Anteaters struck first just 61 seconds into the match. With the ball played at midfield, Alyssa Moore advanced the ball up the middle to Scarlett Camberos who beat her defender and forced goalkeeper Amanda Delgado off her line. Camberos would finish from the right side of the box to quickly put UCI up by one.
CSUN quickly went on the attack and would get shot attempts from Alyssa Aguilar and Sophie Yanez before taking advantage of a set piece in the 17th minute. Cindy Arteaga took a corner kick from the left side and deposited the ball into the UCI box where Ashly Torres and Aguilar got touches on the ball. Aguilar's deflection bounced toward the left post before Cruz finished up the play by pushing the ball past the goal line to even the match at 1-1. CSUN would hold UCI at bay over the final minutes of the first half as Delgado picked up a save. Camberos had the last shot attempt of the half in the 34th minute but the strike went wide.
SECOND HALF
Much like the first half, the Anteaters quickly pulled ahead after intermission. Earning a corner kick in the 48th minute, Chloe Ragon kicked the ball into the box where the Matadors got a touch but Destinee Manzo regained possession and hit the go-ahead goal. Six minutes later, the Anteaters struck again, this time on a drive up the field where a series of passes led to Suus de Bakker directing the ball into the net from the right side.
The second half would be all Anteaters as UCI added three more goals over a 13-minute span to put the game away. In the 64th minute, Manzo recorded her second goal of the night on a score from near the top of the box. Less than six minutes later, a low corner kick pass found Moore who put two touches on the ball before hitting the net. UCI ended the scoring spree in the 77th minute on Moore's second goal following a throw-in. CSUN posted five shots in the second period with three on goal but could not find the net to cut into the UCI lead.
GAME NOTES
Cruz moved into a five-way tie for the team-lead in goals after netting her second of the year. Torres picked up her second assist of the season while Aguilar notched her first helper.
Garrity and Torres had a team-high two shots in the match with Garrity posting a pair of shots on goal. Erin Anderson, Garrity and Torres played the full 90 minutes.
Delgado moved into sole possession of fifth place on CSUN's all-time career matches played (44) and minutes played (3,921) lists.
