Matadors Suffer 2-0 Defeat to CSUB to Wrap Up Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (3-17-0, 2-8 Big West) concluded the 2021 season with a 2-0 loss to CSU Bakersfield (3-14-2, 2-7-1 Big West) on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. In net, Amanda Delgado came on as a reserve in the 27th minute and did not allow a goal while recording two saves. The Roadrunners would be outshot in the match but capitalized on two early goals to take the 2021 season finale.
CSUN outshot CSUB 18-7 in the match and led in shots on goal, 9-5. The Matadors would also earn 11 of the 14 corner kicks. A total of 15 fouls were called on Sunday with CSUN whistled for 12 of those fouls. Gabriela Robles saw the yellow card in the 59th minute.
FIRST HALF
CSUN came out as the aggressors in the early minutes of the first half, picking up four shots in the first 10 minutes including a corner kick. However, the Roadrunners would strike first on their second shot of the afternoon. With the ball played on the Matadors' side of the field, Karen Flores created a scoring chance with a dribble toward the top of the box before depositing a shot over the outstretched hands of Elizabeth Bornhauser and into the net.
The Runners' got back into the scoring column in the 23rd minute. Moments after a corner kick, CSUB forced a turnover leading to a long pass over the top from Kiara Oliver. The pass landed in the box where Bornhauser attempted to break up the play by leaving her post. Litzy Pimentel though beat Bornhauser to the ball with a header that sailed into the net, giving the 'Runners a 2-0 lead. CSUN would have its scoring chances later in the half with two crosses the traveled deep into the box as Ashley Cruz and Sophie Yanez each had quality looks but CSUB managed to break up both plays.
SECOND HALF
Looking to claw back into the match, CSUN began to pressure the CSUB defense resulting in several fouls early in the period. Alyssa Aguilar nearly cut the lead in half with a header that banged off the crossbar in the 58th minute. Both Cindy Arteaga and Brooke Mobeck put shots on frame but each attempt was saved by goalkeeper Flavia Burrell.
Delgado would record two saves in the second half to help keep the Matadors within striking distance while CSUN's defense limited Bakersfield to two shots in the 45-minute period. Down the stretch of the half, CSUN recorded three more shots in the final eight minutes with Sydney Gilbert's shot from near the right post being the closest to hit the net, however, her shot went wide.
GAME NOTES
Sunday's season finale represented the final game for the Matadors' senior class. Gilbert and Briana Rios started in their final match at CSUN while Delgado and Sophie Yanez entered as reserves. Also wrapping up their careers with the Matadors were Kimberly Anderson, Sadie Armijo and Cora Willcot.
The trio of Robles, Kacie Garrity and Ashly Torres played the fuill 90 minutes in the contest. Cindy Arteaga finished with six shots and three on goal.
Gilbert finished one match shy of CSUN's all-time career top-10 list in career matches played. The senior midfielder played in 77 matches for the Matadors since 2017, posting 10 points and four goals. In net, Delgado concluded her fourth year with CSUN ranked fourth in team history in career shutouts (12), fifth in matches played in goal (46), minutes played in goal (4,075) and wins (17), and sixth in saves (187).
