CSUN Rallies Twice to Tie Sacramento State 2-2
10/6/2021 10:36:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN rallied twice in the second half from a one-goal deficit as the Matadors played Sacramento State to a 2-2 tie in Big West Conference Men's Soccer action Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field.
"To fight and come back twice against a good Sacramento State team, says a lot about us," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila.
The teams played to a scoreless first half. The Matadors outshot the Hornets in the opening 45 minutes 6-4 with Sacramento State goalie Ryan Curtis and CSUN keeper David Preys each making two saves on the two shots that were on goal.
Zack Mason broke the seal in the 49th minute when his long ball off a Titus Washington rebound went in the top left of the CSUN net. Redshirt freshman Jamar Ricketts tied the score in the 58th. Jordan Isibor passed the ball to Marvin Arias who sent a pass into the box, finding Ricketts in front to make it 1-1.
Sacramento State took the lead again at 62:54. Christo Cervantes took advantage of a CSUN turnover and passed the ball to Genaro Alfaro who was stationed inside the Matadors' goalkeeper's box and scored his second goal of the year. 31 seconds later, Isibor was sent on a run by Giovanni Aguilar and his attempt from five yards tied the match once again.
Preys made a pair of saves in the 71st and 72nd minutes. Curtis did the same, making saves in the 79th and 81st. Michael Arrington posted the final CSUN shot of the second half for the Matadors in the 85th. Francisco Magana was turned away by Preys with 1:55 remaining in regulation to send the match to overtime.
The Hornets recorded all four shots in the first overtime, but each attempt would either go wide or high of the CSUN net. The only attempt in the second overtime was by Titus Washington who capped off a Hornets' rush and went high with three seconds to go in the match.
"They started to go and work from the wings in the second half (which created chances)," Davila said. "We turned the ball over in front of the goal twice and they were able to capitalize on one of those opportunities. Jamar deserved to score his first goal. No one has worked as hard as him and no one deserves it as much as him. We went on a hunch that Jordan could play forward, and he had a goal and assist tonight."
The Hornets (3-6-3, 1-0-2 Big West) outshot CSUN 20-13, 10-6 on goal. Preys made a season-high eight saves while Curtis record four. Sacramento State had 10 corner kicks compared to one for the Matadors.
