2022Â CSUN Men's Volleyball Schedule
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN Men's Volleyball announced its 2022 schedule Thursday as the Matadors will play a 26-match regular-season schedule which includes 13 home matches and 10 Big West Conference matches.
"We're preparing to play the best teams in the country with our goal of playing for a national championship," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "And to win a national championship, you have to beat the best to be the best and that's always our goal."
After playing only conference matches during the abbreviated 2021 season, the Matadors return to a competitive non-conference schedule in 2022 which opens with the three matches at the UCSB Invitational.Â
Â
CSUN will play a host of Fall dates including a Nov. 3 exhibition match at home against defending national champions Hawai'i, annual pre-season tournaments at USC (Nov. 6) and UCLA (Nov. 12-13) before officially opening the 2022 season in a familiar place. As they have done for the 14 of the past 17 seasons, the Matadors open the season in Goleta at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational. CSUN will meet Concordia-Irvine, USC and UCLA over the three-day tournament which runs from Jan. 6-8.
CSUN opens the home schedule the following Friday (Jan. 15) against Erskine before hosting Princeton on Jan. 19. The Matadors close the opening month of the season with a road match at UCLA (Jan. 27) before hosting Cal Lutheran on Jan. 28.
The final stretch of non-conference matches begins in February with home matches against UC Merced (Feb. 4) and Vanguard (Feb. 9) before CSUNÂ travels to USC (Feb. 10) and Stanford (Feb. 19). The Matadors will take on Saint Katherine (Feb. 23), Stanford (Feb. 26) and NJIT (Mar. 3) at home before opening the Big West season Mar. 10 at UC Santa Barbara. After concluding a two-match home and home series with the Gauchos (Mar. 10-11), CSUNÂ renews its local rivalry with Pepperdine. The Matadors and Waves will meet in Malibu on Mar. 16 before meeting in The Matadome two nights later (Mar. 18).
"Having Stanford, USC and Pepperdine back on the schedule this season makes our 2022 schedule as high-level as you can get," said Campbell who opens his 25th season in January. "Our team is looking forward to the challenge and we'll be ready for the intense competition that this schedule will provide."
The Big West season resumes in earnest Mar. 25 as CSUN travels to Honolulu for a pair of matches against the Rainbow Warriors (Mar. 25-26). March closes with a road match at UC San Diego (Mar. 31) before the Matadors open the final month of the regular season against the Tritons in The Matadome on Apr. 2.
The remainder of April features home-and-home series' against UC Irvine (Apr. 8-9) and Long Beach State (Apr. 15-16).
"The Big West landscape has changed somewhat this year with some of the teams losing some fifth and sixth-year seniors," added Campbell. "The bottom line is the conference will be as competitive as ever this year and we've got to be ready to play at a high level every single night, and we'll be prepared to do just that."
The fourth Big West Men's Volleyball Tournament opens at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, O'ahu on April 21 with a pair of quarterfinal matches. Semifinal matches will be played Apr. 22 with the Big West Championship match slated for Saturday, Apr. 23. The 2022 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship will be contested May 5-7 at Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA.
