The U.S. won all four its matches, posting a 12-1 set record in the tournament. The USA opened with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-22 win over the Dominican Republic before sweeping Trinidad & Tobago, 25-15, 25-19, 25-15. After receiving a bye in the Quarterfinals, USA posted a 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 sweep over Mexico in the Semifinals before defeating Costa Rica, 3-1 in the final.
Douphner set the US offense to a .603 hitting clip in a 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 sweep over Trinidad & Tobago on Sept. 24. The U.S. led in kills (45-30), blocks (6-2) and served nine of the 10 aces in the match. Douphner ran the offense that committed just seven errors in 63 total attacks. He also added six points on two kills, two blocks and two aces.
"It was a huge privilege to represent my country and USA Volleyball while getting to play some great volleyball," said Douphner. "Winning Gold made the experience even more special, and it was an honor to be part of a group of great players from across the nation representing the United States."
Mason, who was also representing USA Volleyball for the first time, spoke highly of his experience coaching the U23 Team.
"Having the opportunity to represent my country and bring back a Gold Medal was one of the greatest accomplishments of my career," he said. "I am incredibly proud of the athletes in the way they competed. Not only did they come together as a team and play at their best at the most important times, but they represented USA Volleyball with incredible sportsmanship and respect for their opponents. To see their hard work rewarded with winning the tournament was incredibly rewarding.
"I want to thank the athletes, head coach Nickie Sanlin, assistant coach Ali'i Keohohou, and the whole USA staff who made this trip something I won't soon forget," Mason added.
