CSUN Splits Softball Season Opener At Cal Poly
3/20/2021 6:53:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—CSUN and Cal Poly split a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field. Saturday marked the 2021 season opener for the Matadors.
GAME 1
CSUN defeated Cal Poly 4-3 to begin the day.
Alexis Lemus led off the game by smacking an inside-the-park home run. A Mt. SAC transfer, this was Lemus' first at-bat in a Matador uniform. Jaymi Steward increased the lead later in the top of the first when she recorded an opposite-field home run to left.
A CSUN error in the bottom of third led to a two-out Noellah Ramos two-RBI single that tied the game. Cal Poly threatened in the fifth, putting runners on the corners with two outs. CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson struck out Maddie Amos to put down the threat
Aaliyah Swan singled to lead off the Matadors' sixth. Savanah Favre followed with a single through the left side to push Swan up a base. A Steward sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. Kiarra Crockett-Pope's infield single scored Swan as Favre moved to third. Paloma Usquiano's sacrifice fly to right field drove in Favre for a 4-2 CSUN lead. Jamerson grounded out for the final out of the frame.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Amos singled. Kai Barrett singled to bring up Sarah Wulff. Freshman Eryka Gonzales relieved Jamerson in the circle. Wulff walked to load the bases. Sydney Frankenberger grounded out on the first pitch she saw from Gonzales for the third out.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Shelby Jeffries walked. Amos reached on an error allowing both runners to move up a base. Hailey Martin struck out. Xiara Diaz singled to load the bases. Napoli walked, Jeffries scored, making the score 4-3. With the count 1-0, Barrett flew out to right to end the game.
In addition to her home run, Lemus went 2-for-4. Swan was also 2-for-4. Frankenberger, Diaz, and Barrett combined for six of the nine Mustangs' hits (two each). Jamerson picked up the victory with Gonzales recording the save. The victory was the first for CSUN in San Luis Obispo since 2016 when the Matadors took 2-of-3 from the Mustangs in a series.
"It was great to get back on the field and see them compete and go out and get a win," said CSUN head coach Charlotte Morgan. "Overall, I thought we did some really good things and then there's still a lot we need to keep working on. KJ came out and gave us a great start on the mound and Eryka stepped up and closed the game for us. I am proud of the way they competed until the last pitch."
GAME 2
The Mustangs handed the Matadors a 3-1 defeat in the nightcap.
An Amos infield single drove in Ramos with two outs in the bottom of the first to give Cal Poly the lead. A Jefferies double and a second RBI single for Amos in the bottom of the third extended the Mustangs' advantage to three.
Steward worked out a one-out walk in the fourth and stole second. Crockett-Pope battled for a walk to give the Matadors two base runners. Usquiano grounded out which allowed the runners to advance. Sami Garcia grounded out for the final out.
Jamerson led off the seventh with a double and advanced to third on a Jeffries wild pitch. Usquiano struck out. Jaclyn Silva, pinch-hitting for Garcia, singled up the middle to drive Jamerson. Garcia re-entered at first for Silva and reached second on a Tatum Wentworth single. Journey Rojas' 4-6 fielder's choice resulted in CSUN runners on the corners with two outs. Lemus' shot down the line in foul territory was caught by a diving Napoli to secure the victory for the Mustangs.
Jeffries tossed a complete-game four-hitter, striking out five, and walking three. Ramos was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Amos went 2-for-3.
"I was really glad to see our team come back and fight until the last pitch," said Morgan. "I always say, give us a chance to win, and we will get the winning run to come up to the plate. There's still work to do but overall excited for our young players to come in like Jaclyn and Tatum to get an RBI and a big single. I saw some great things on the field and everyone contributed today. We are going to need everyone this season and I thought everyone did a great job in their role."
The series concludes Sunday afternoon with a single game beginning at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed by BigWest.tv with all links available on GoMatadors.com.
