Cal Poly Edges CSUN 10-8 to Take Series
3/22/2021 6:21:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A two-run fifth inning proved to be the difference in CSUN Baseball's (1-3, 1-3 Big West) 10-8 loss to Cal Poly (11-6, 3-1 Big West) on Monday afternoon at Matador Field. Kai Moody went 3-for-5 with a run scored while Denzel Clarke and Carlos Arellano drove in two runs apiece. The Matadors held a 7-2 lead after one inning but the Mustangs hung a six-spot in the second inning and broke an 8-8 tie in the top of the fifth to win the weekend series.
GAME BREAKDOWN
In a wild first inning that took nearly a full hour to complete, the teams combined for nine runs on nine hits. For the fourth consecutive day, Cal Poly scored first as Brooks Lee stroked a two-run home run to give the Mustangs a 2-0 edge.
CSUN quickly responded in the bottom of the first when Ryan Ball singled and Jayson Newman followed with an RBI double. Two batters later, Moody evened the game on a single through the right side. After Jacob Bravo roped a ground-rule double, Angel Mendoza singled to left center to bring home Moody and give CSUN a one-run lead. Arellano continued the hit parade with a blooper to left field that Reagan Doss could not handle, scoring two more runs. Clarke became the sixth-straight Matador to reach base with two outs with a line shot to third base that skipped into left field, plating Arellano and Robert Bullard.
Leading 7-2, CSUN starter Blaine Traxel struck out two of the first four batters in the top of the second but the Mustang bats would come alive moments later. Consecutive bloop singles to right field off the bats of Cole Cabrera and Myles Emmerson plated two runs. Lee then hit a line shot off of Traxel's foot to bring in another run. Tate Samuelson would deliver the big blow, a three-run home run that put Cal Poly on top 8-7.Â
Despite the rough second inning, Traxel bounced back with consecutive shutout innings. In both the third and fourth, Traxel stranded two runners in scoring position to keep CSUNÂ close.
After being turned away in the second inning, the Matadors evened the game in the bottom of the third. Bullard kicked off the inning with a double before Arellano hit a single up the middle to put runners at the corners. Two batters later, Ball tied up the game by hitting into a fielder's choice, scoring Bullard.
Chad Wilson entered the game to pitch for CSUN in the fifth and would surrender two unearned runs. Wilson gave up a leadoff single but committed a throwing error on a come backer to the mound from Doss. Wilson rebounded to retire the next two batters but Emmerson singled and Lee drove in two more runs to break the 8-8 tie.
Cal Poly's reliever Kyle Scott would cool off the Matador bats over five strong innings of relief where he scattered four hits. CSUN threatened in the bottom of the seventh against Scott after two-straight singles to start the frame. However, Scott retired the next three batters in order to escape the jam.
Mustang pitchers Derek True and Drew Thrope each threw clean innings to secure the Mustang win.
GAME NOTES
Out of the bullpen, Wilson pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs with a strikeout. In addition to going 1-for-5 at the plate, Newman worked 1.2 shutout innings with two strikeouts. Blake Schriever retired the only two batters he faced in the top of the ninth.
Clarke has reached base safely in 16-straight games and hit safely in 10 in a row, dating back to last season. Moody and Clarke are the only Matadors to hit safely in all four games this season.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Our expectations were higher coming into the weekend. We didn't want to lose the series, we didn't want to go 1-3 but I'll take the battle that we had today any day of the week. We minimized our free passes, I thought we showed some fight. As I shared with the team, you look at Traxel's line, it wasn't great, he gave up some runs and some hits. But I'll take the fight he had on the mound all day long because that was mental toughness. He made some pitches, they fought some pitches over infielders' heads. He kept fighting and fighting. He kept forcing them to beat them with the bat.
We never want to learn by losing but I think we learned a lot today about ourselves. There's no doubt in my mind, these guys want to win. Now it's taking it and not trying so hard. I see a lot of trying because they want to win, they want to be successful for their teammates. They want to be good for each other. Now we've just got to contain that."
UP NEXT
The Matadors hit the road for the first time this season when they visit Long Beach State this Friday for the start of a four-game series. First pitch for the opener is set for 6 p.m. on BigWest.TV.
