The Matadors opened up their 63rd season of baseball last weekend against Cal Poly. CSUN took the series opener on Saturday 13-10 but dropped the last three games to lose the series. The Mustangs edged CSUN in game two, 8-7, then won in seven innings, 12-1 to close Sunday's doubleheader. CSUN held an early five-run lead in the finale but Cal Poly would prevail 10-8 last Monday. In the Matadors' win in game one, they pounded out three home runs and scored multiple times in five innings.
On the hitting side, CSUN saw several standout performances in its first series of the season. Kai Moody hit a team-best .571 (8-of-14) in the four games and scored a team-leading four times. Jayson Newman drove in a team-high five runs over the four games and shared the team lead in runs scored with Denzel Clarke (5). Freshman Ryan Ball also drove in four runs to go with two runs scored in his first collegiate games.
On the mound, Blake Schriever earned his first win of the season in the opener where he worked 1.1 shutout innings to help fend off a late Mustang rally. He finished with two clean innings of work for the weekend. Jackson Cunningham also had a quality outing out of the bullpen as he allowed a run over 3.1 innings.
A total of 11 players made their Matador debut last weekend. Ball appeared in all four games, making three starts in the infield while Bobby Silvis played in three games, Angel Mendoza and Jacob Bravo appeared in two games and CJ Yogi and Nathan Barraza played in one game.
