CSUN Swept by UCSB in Saturday Doubleheader
4/10/2021 7:28:00 PM | Baseball
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (5-10, 5-10 Big West) dropped both of its games to No. 25 UC Santa Barbara (21-8, 11-3 Big West) on Saturday. The Matadors were run-ruled in game one, 11-1 in eight innings and suffered an 11-3 loss in game two. Seniors Jose Ruiz, Blake Doremus and Robert Bullard all homered in the doubleheader. On the pitching side, Jeremy Hassel pitched 4.0 innings, allowing a run to go with five strikeouts in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Matadors' bats would be silenced by UCSB starter Rodney Boone in game one while the Gauchos' bats came alive in a 10-run triumph for the home team.
CSUN threatened in the first inning against Boone as Mason Le walked and Kai Moody singled to start the game. Boone though rallied to strike out the next three batters in succession to end the threat. Boone continued his strikeout barrage with five more punch-outs over the next two frames.
Zuko Tillman followed suit with back-to-back shutout innings to start the game but the Gauchos broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run from Gianni Bloom in the third. After retiring the next three batters to end the third, Tillman ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Three hit batters along with three Gaucho hits contributed to a three-run fourth inning that put CSUN in a 4-0 hole.
The Gauchos continued to flex their muscles in the fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead. Zach Rodriguez led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer and Christian Kirtley stroked a two-run blast an inning later.
Trailing 8-0 and held without a hit since the first inning, Ruiz broke the string with a solo home run off Boone to kick off the seventh inning.
Elias Jauregui worked two innings out of the bullpen including a shutout seventh inning. The Gauchos though pushed across three more runs in the eighth inning to clinch a run-rule victory. Rodriguez added to his RBI total with a two-run single that extended the lead to 11-1, ending the ballgame in the process.
Boone pitched 6.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits with 14 strikeouts to pick up the win. Tillman worked 5.1 innings, yielding eight runs while striking out four batters.
Le reached base twice in the contest while Denzel Clarke walked twice and stole a base.
GAME TWO RECAP
Building off the momentum of game one, the Gauchos jumped on CSUN for nine runs over the first two innings and never looked back for their third-straight win in the series.
After CSUN left the bases loaded in the first inning, the Gauchos once again picked up a home run. Chad Wilson retired the first batter in the inning but served up a double to Jordan Sprinkle then a two-run home run to Broc Mortensen.
UCSB would break the game wide open with a seven-run second inning against Wilson. Jason Willow opened up the scoring with an RBI single before Mason Eng drove in two more with a double. UCSB added three runs all with two outs, capitalizing on an early CSUN error in the inning. Bryce Willits closed the scoring spree with a two-run double to left.
The Matadors were held to two hits until the sixth inning when Doremus stepped to the plate and hit a pinch-hit home run. CSUN picked up another long ball an inning later on a two-run drive from Bullard.
CSUN though never drew closer. The Gauchos put up a single tally in the fourth and the eighth inning to take an 11-3 lead. The Matadors would be retired in order in the ninth to end the game.
Hassel came on in relief in the third and yielded just one hit over his four innings of work. Ryan Wentz worked 1.2 innings, allowing a run while Kyle Hoskins recorded the final out of the eighth.
On the bump for UCSB, Cory Lewis pitched 6.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing three runs to go with 11 strikeouts.
GAME NOTES
Moody extended his hit streak to 14-straight games in the opener but saw his hit streak end in game two. Ball would stretch his on-base streak to 14 consecutive games in the doubleheader.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Very tough day overall for our team. As I said to the team, there were some small victories that I saw over the two games. The pitching of Jeremy Hassel, Ryan Wentz and Elias Jauregui in some small stints of their outings, plus Kyle Hoskins coming in. From the offensive side, Blake Doremus and Robbie Bullard responded the right way when they got their opportunities. We get an opportunity to salvage a game in tomorrow's finale and that would be big for us. As this team's coach along with my coaching staff, we will continue to work to keep getting this team better in all areas."
