Matadors Rack Up 14 Hits, Sodersten Tosses Complete Game in 11-1 Win
4/23/2021 6:13:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Blake Sodersten tossed his first career complete game as CSUN Baseball run-ruled Cal State Fullerton 11-1 in eight innings on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Sodersten allowed one run on three hits to go with seven strikeouts to pick up his first victory of the season. On the hitting side, every Matador collected at least one hit, highlighted by three-hit efforts from Kai Moody and Jose Ruiz. The Matadors scored three runs in the eighth inning, capped by a two-run double from Ryan Ball to clinch a run-rule win.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Matadors took advantage of a two-out error to push across two runs against Fullerton starter Tanner Bibee in the first inning. After Kai Moody doubled earlier in the frame, Jayson Newman hit a grounder to short that could have ended the inning but shortstop Josh Urps misplayed the ball allowing Moody to score. Two batters later, Denzel Clarke came through with an RBI double that skipped over the head of third baseman JJ Cruz to make it a 2-0 game.
CSUN added to its lead in the second inning thanks in large part to a pair of walks and quickness on the base paths. Brandon Bohning would walk to start the inning and eventually stole second then third base. Robert Bullard worked a walk before successfully stealing second base with Moody at the plate. On the Bullard steal, Bohning touched home plate on a delayed steal. Moody kept the rally going with a single to left that was misplayed by Jason Brandow, allowing Bullard to score. Newman put the Matadors' fifth run on the board with a sacrifice fly.
The early run support would be more than enough for Sodersten who frustrated the Titan hitters throughout the day. The right-hander faced one over the minimum through the first three innings and yielded just one hit, a bunt single, through six innings. Sodersten struck out the last two batters in the sixth, capping a stretch where he retired eight-straight batters.
Caden Connor, who provided the lone hit against Sodersten through six innings, led off the seventh inning with a walk before Sodersten hit the next batter. Sodersten though bounced back to sit down the next three batters to keep the Titans scoreless after seven.
Meanwhile, the Matadors scored at least a run in five of the first six innings. In the third, Bohning muscled his first home run of the season over the left-field wall. An inning later, Newman picked up a two-out RBI double that plated Ruiz. The Matadors would take an 8-0 lead in the sixth on an RBI single from Ruiz.
Tossing a one-hitter in the eighth, Sodersten surrendered a two-out RBI double to Deylan Pigford that cut the CSUN lead to 8-1. Moments later, Connor singled through the left side but Bullard threw out Pigford at the plate to end the inning.
The Matadors would collect three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth to clinch the run-rule win. With one out, Carlos Arellano and Bullard singled before Moody drew a walk to load the bases. Ruiz drove in another run on an RBI single to make it 9-1 but on the play, a second CSUN potential run was erased at the plate by Pigford in right. Newman would keep the inning alive with a walk to load the bases once again, setting the stage for Ball to knock in two runs on a double to right field.
GAME NOTES
Sodersten tossed the Matadors' third complete game of the season, joining Blaine Traxel who has the other two. Sodersten also posted his second quality start of the year.
Ball extended his on-base streak to 20 games after going 1-for-4 with a walk. Moody collected his team-leading ninth multiple-hit game of the season while Ruiz picked up his seventh. After suffering an injury last month, Newman started his first game since March 26 and went 1-for-3 at the plate.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"The story of the game was Blake. He was coming out in the eighth if we wouldn't have ended the game. But as he knows, and I know, I'm going to keep pushing him because he could be better. That seventh inning was a big inning where we walk a guy and hit a guy, but he got out of it and got a zero. In the eighth inning, he gave up a run after the walk. Little things like that will prevent you from getting personal awards like a shutout. But I thought he pitched really well.
The story of the day also was the offense. [We pushed] runs across early, I thought our approach was fabulous. Tanner Bibee is a really good pitcher, one of the better pitchers in the Big West. I thought our approach was selfless with a lot of unselfish at-bats. We scored some runs with two outs, which are always backbreakers. Overall, like I shared with the team, that was good baseball. It was fun to be a part of that." OneÂ
