FULLERTON, Calif.—Kelsie Whitmore's double in the bottom of the seventh pushed Cal State Fullerton past CSUN 4-3 in the opening game of a Big West softball series Friday night at Anderson Family Field.
The Titans mounted a 3-run rally in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The rally was highlighted by a Hannah Becerra hit a two-run home run. Savannah Favre tied the game in the top of the third when she hit a three-run opposite-field home run to left.
Cal State Fullerton left a runner on in scoring position in the fourth when CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson quieted the threat with back-to-back outs. The Matadors left a single baserunner on in the fifth and sixth as Titans' starter Sophie Frost worked around CSUN.
Daisy Munoz led off the bottom of the sixth with an infield single off of Matador reliever Eryka Gonzales. Irie Siofele successfully sacrificed Munoz to second with a bunt. Julia Valenzuela singled up the middle. The throw from CSUN centerfielder Jaymi Steward kept Munoz from scoring, but allowed Valenzuela to take second. KK Humphreys fouled out to first for the second out. Gonzales got Peyton Toto to ground out to third to end the inning.
Frost retired CSUN in order in the top of the seventh. Evelyn Sabin opened the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left-field line. Megan Delgadillo was hit by a Gonzales pitch, setting the stage for Whitmore's game-winning hit.
Frost tossed a complete-game five-hitter. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Becerra and Valenzuela combined for four (two each) of the eight Cal State Fullerton hits.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Both teams fought until the end tonight. Fullerton played a great game and got the clutch hit at the end. Our pitchers did a great job and our offense had much better at-bats than we did last week. Savannah came up big with her three-run home run. We have been coaching the team to play our game. and we did just that tonight."
CSUN (2-8, 2-8 Big West) and Cal State Fullerton (22-11, 7-0 Big West) conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. on BigWest.tv.
