FULLERTON, Calif.—CSUN dropped a pair of games to Big West leader Cal State Fullerton as the series between the two teams came to end with a doubleheader Saturday at Anderson Family Field.
GAME 1
Cal State Fullerton (24-11, 9-0 Big West) opened the day with a 3-2 victory.
Alexis Lemus and Aaliyah Swan opened the top of the first with back-to-back walks. A Savannah Favre ground out allowed both runners to advance a base. Jaymi Steward's infield single loaded the bases. Titans' starter Ellie Zellien struck out Kenedee Jamerson looking before getting Maiya Alemania to fly out to center for the third out.
Irie Siofele broke the seal in the bottom of the second for the Titans with a one-out home run. Kelsie Whitmore made it a 2-0 game in the fourth when she led off the frame with a solo home run. Daisy Munoz's RBI single later in the inning increased the Cal State Fullerton advantage to three.
Favre led off the sixth with an opposite-field double to left. Steward cut the Titans' lead to one with a two-run home run to right-centerfield. Jamerson walked. Dani Martinez relieved Zellien. Her first batter was Alemania who struck out. Martinez struck Paloma Usquiano looking before pinch-hitter Sami Garcia fouled out to second for the final out of the inning.
Journey Rojas led off the CSUN seventh with a single, her second hit of the game. Lemus successfully sacrificed Rojas to second with a bunt. Martinez struck out Swan. Favre flew out to left to end the game.
Jamerson was the hard-luck loser. She allowed only four Cal State Fullerton hits. She struck out three and walked one. Steward was 2-for-3. Munoz was 2-for-4 for the Titans. Zellien and Martinez combined on a six-hitter and six strikeouts.
GAME 2
The Titans hit three homes in the bottom of the third as Cal State Fullerton defeated the Matadors 9-1 in the nightcap. A CSUN error helped lead to two Cal State Fullerton runs in the bottom of the first.
Steward reached on an infield single to lead off the Matadors' second. She stole second before Jamerson walked. Rojas' sac bunt advanced both runners up a base. Usquiano grounded out to third, but Steward was able to score to cut the Titans' lead in half. Sophie Frost, the Cal State Fullerton pitcher, got Tatum Wentworth to foul out to keep the lead in favor of the Titans.
Hannah Becerra (two-run), Julia Valenzuela, and KK Humphreys were the third-inning home run hitters in the third as the lead extended to five. The Titans added a run in the fifth on a Jody Cova RBI grounder. Becerra drove in the eighth run with a sacrifice fly. The ninth and final run scored on the play when CSUN committed an error on the throwback into the infield.
Frost picked up her second win of the series as she combined with Alexis Silvas on a four-hitter. She would tally three strikeouts and a walk. Megan Delgadillo and Valenzuela each recorded two of the 10 Cal State Fullerton hits.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Today was tough. Fullerton did a good job once again in both games. We fought hard in game one, but we let game two slip away from us. We have to keep doing the little things and keep getting better every pitch and I didn't feel like we did that today. I am proud of their fight in the first two games, but we have to fight in every game in the series."
CSUN (2-10, 2-10 Big West) hosts UC Davis (9-18, 3-5 Big West) next week. The Aggies host UC Riverside on Sunday before coming to Northridge. The series begins on Friday with a doubleheader on BigWest.tv set for 1 p.m.
