NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- CSUN returns to Big West action this week as the Matadors travel to UC San Diego.
Â
The series begins Friday at 5 p.m. with the double header set for Saturday at 1 p.m. ESPN 3 will stream the event with Ted Mendenhall and Sara Allard on the call. All links will be available on GoMatadors.com.
Â
In its first season at the Division I level, UC San Diego is 11-18, 7-11 in Big West play. Kella Bosinger leads the Tritons in hitting (.333) and is tied for second on the team in home runs (3) with Sherriah Harrington. Harrington is 12th in the Big West in RBI with 18. Robyn Wampler is pacing the pitching staff as she is third in the league in shutouts (2), fourth in innings pitched (100.2), fifth in strikeouts (67), sixth in complete games (7), and seventh in wins (6).
Â
This is the first time that the Matadors and the Tritons are playing since 1990 when UCSD was a Division III program and CSUN was playing at the Division II level. This is the sixth, seventh, and eighth times that the teams are playing with CSUN leading the all-time series 5-0.
Â
The Matadors improved to 5-15 overall (3-15 Big West) when CSUN swept the University of San Diego 4-3 (8 innings) and 5-3 Apr. 28.
Â
Freshman Eryka Gonzales won both games of the doubleheader. She pitched the final two innings of the opener. Gonzales did not give up a run and allowed two hits. In the nightcap, she recorded her fifth complete game of the year. Gonzales scattered seven hits, struck out three while not walking a batter. She only needed 76 pitches as she allowed one earned run. Paloma Usquiano went 3-for-3 with two RBI in game two to lead the Matadors to the victory.
Â
A year after having an opportunity to take on the USA Softball Women's National Team (WNT) rained out, CSUN will welcome the WNT to Matador Diamond Sunday, May 16 for an exhibition that will close out the 2021 regular season for the Matadors. The teams were to have played on Mar. 10, 2020, in Santee, Calif., but rain forced the cancellation of that game. On the dirt of Matador Diamond, the two clubs will play a 10-inning exhibition game. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
