The Tritons (12-18, 8-11 Big West) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first. Kenedee Jamerson quieted the threat when she struck out Deena Pederson on 3-2 count.
Jaymi Steward led off the top of the second with an opposite field triple to left. Jamerson hit a grounder back to Kaia Simpson in the circle. Simpson looked Steward back and threw onto to first for the out. Simpson struck out Aaliyah Swan looking. Paloma Usquiano grounded out to short for the final out.
UC San Diego put a pair of runners on with one out in the bottom of the second. Jamerson bounced back, getting a pair of ground ball outs to keep the game scoreless. Steward broke the seal in the top of the fourth when she smacked her fifth home run of the year with two outs, giving CSUN the lead.
Pederson opened the UCSD fourth with a double to left. Eryka Gonzales relieved Jamerson. On her second pitch to Danica Kazakoff, an error was committed by CSUN which resulted in runners on the corners for the Tritons. Kazakoff stole second. Kinley Kyro's sacrifice fly to right plated Pederson to tie the score. Pinch-hitter Gabby Williams homered to centerfield to give UC San Diego the lead.
Sherriah Harrington, Pederson, and Kazakoff all drove in runs in the fifth to increase the Tritons' advantage. Sami Garcia reached on an error with one out in the sixth. Savannah Favre followed with a walk. Steward reached on the second error of the inning to load the bases. Jamerson went to the opposite field, doubling down the left field line to drive in two runs.
Robin Wampler relieved Simpson. Her first batter was Swan. Wampler would strike out Swan looking. She hit Usquiano to load the bases. Tatum Wentworth grounded out to end the inning.
Steward led the Matadors (5-16, 3-16 Big West) and Garcia combined for four of the five CSUN hits (two each). Bobbi Aguirre was 3-for-4 while Pedersen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Simpson got the win while Wampler earned the save. The duo combined for nine strikeouts.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"UC San Diego did a great job holding us down tonight. They came out and played a hard-fought game. I thought Jaymi Steward and Sami Garcia had some great at-bats but we need to do a better job of executing on offense as a team. We had our opportunities but we did not capitalize. Defensively and in the circle, we just came out flat. We need to come out with better intensity and focus tomorrow for games two and three."
