Matadors Split Doubleheader at UC Davis
5/8/2021 9:09:00 PM | Baseball
GAME ONE RECAP
The Matadors scored eight runs over the final three innings, highlighted by a five-run eighth to pick up a come-from-behind win in the opener.
Trailing 5-3 heading to the seventh, CSUN pulled a run closer on an RBI single from Clarke to plate Ruiz, who singled to start the inning. The Matadors would go in front in the eighth inning when they sent 11 batters to the plate. In the frame, Dalton Vanhille singled and Robert Bullard legged out a bunt single to set the table for Moody who brought in the tying run on a single. It would only be the beginning of a huge inning for the CSUN offense. Two more walks resulted in the Matadors going back in front 6-5 before Clarke delivered again with another run-scoring single. Ruiz and Newman later scored on wild pitches to put the Matadors ahead 9-5.
CSUN scored two insurance runs in the ninth inning, capped by an RBI single from Carlos Arellano with two outs. Jackson Cunningham worked the final two innings to secure the victory.
Earlier in the game, the Matadors took advantage of a fielding error at first base to plate two runs in the first. After Bullard reached on the miscue, Jose Ruiz worked a one-out walk before Newman roped an RBI single. Clarke added to the lead with a two-out RBI double down the left-field line.
The Aggies responded quickly in the home half of the first with five hits. The first three batters reached on singles and it appeared as though Gavin Lizik would hold UC Davis to a single run after retiring two-straight batters but Michael Campagna and Kyler Arenado connected for consecutive hits.
Trailing 3-2, the Matadors quickly answered with a single tally in the second to even the game up. Bullard kept the inning alive with a two-out double before Moody came through with an RBI single.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the third when Colton Evans knocked in the go-ahead run on a single. Lizik induced a timely double play to end the third but a leadoff walk in the fourth led to another UC Davis run. Jalen Smith gave the Aggies a 5-3 lead with an infield RBI single with two outs.
Lizik pitched a shutout fifth before being lifted in the sixth in favor of Wilson. The Aggies would threaten in the sixth and seventh innings but Wilson turned away each scoring threat. In relief, Wilson allowed just one hit with three strikeouts while retiring five batters.
GAME TWO RECAP
In a game with six ties, the Matadors took a one-run lead to the bottom of the eighth but could not hold off a late surge from the Aggies.
CSUN again struck first in the opening inning when Mason Le drove in Moody from third on a groundout. Jeremy Hassel got off to a strong start on the mound with a perfect first inning but the Aggies turned the tide an inning later. The first three Aggies reached to start the bottom of the second with Ben Griffin tying the game on an RBI hit. Two batters later, Isaiah Verrett collected a bunt single to put UC Davis ahead.
However, CSUN was not behind long as Le belted a one-out solo home run in the top of the third. An inning later, the Matadors' offense broke out for a four-run frame, highlighted by a two-run triple from Arellano. Moody pushed the lead to 6-2 on a sacrifice fly moments later.
The seesaw game continued in the bottom of the fourth. After two-straight singles, Verrett hit a three-run homer to cut the lead down to one. CSUN pitching issued three-straight walks and two wild pitches that resulted in two more runs, giving UC Davis a 7-6 edge.
The Matadors again responded this time in the fifth when Clarke scored on a sacrifice fly from Sean Skelly. CSUN would go in front an inning later on another sacrifice fly off the bat of Vanhille.
Zuko Tillman, who recorded the final out of the fourth, gave the Matadors needed relief on the mound with back-to-back shutout innings. The Aggies though finally scratched across the tying run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Spencer Gedestad.
The eighth inning would be another wild inning for both sides. Newman gave the Matadors a 9-8 lead on a solo homer but the lead was short-lived. The home half of the eighth saw two hit batters, a walk and a CSUN error along with two Aggie hits that eventually put CSUN in a 13-9 hole.
The Matadors would go in order in the ninth, clinching a doubleheader split.
GAME NOTES
In all, the Matadors combined for 30 hits in the doubleheader with six hitters producing multiple-hit games including Clarke who had two three-hit efforts. Game two saw Luke Powell, Silvis and Arellano have two-hit games. Moody posted his 13th multiple-hit game of the season while Clarke notched his 10th. Clarke has also reached base safely in 17-straight games to go with a 13-game hit streak.
Tillman worked 3.2 innings out of the bullpen, the most of any reliever on Saturday, with three runs allowed.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Today was a tale of two takes. After being down in game one, we fought back and came out on top. Even though it may not have been one of Gavin Lizik's best days, I feel he battled and fought to give us a chance to come back. Chad Wilson's two innings of scoreless relief was a huge momentum change for us. But in game two, UC Davis turned the tables on us and when we gave them some opportunities they took advantage of them. It was a tough loss for our team and our guys. On the positive side of things, we still can come out and take the series tomorrow. I'm excited to see how this team responds."
