NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN head women's basketball coach Lindsey Foster has announced the promotion of Lauren Unger on the Matadors' coaching staff.
"I am extremely grateful and beyond excited for the incredible opportunity to be joining Coach Foster and her staff at CSUN," Unger said. "I have immense respect and admiration for what she has accomplished in the Big West Conference and believe wholeheartedly in her vision for the program. I am eager to get on campus, build relationships, and assist in every way I can to create a championship program, both on and off the court."
Unger served as CSUN's volunteer assistant for the abbreviated 2020-21 season. She assisted in the Matadors' recruiting efforts including creating virtual in-home visits, sharing in the recruiting efforts for 2021, 2022, and 2023 classes.
"We are very excited for the opportunity to elevate Lauren within our program," said Foster. "She not only brings a wealth of knowledge but also an unbridled passion for the game and for mentoring young women. Our student-athletes and our Matador nation are going to love her boundless positive energy combined with her competitive spirit."
Before joining the Matadors' staff. Unger served as the head women's basketball coach at Western New Mexico University from 2016-2020. Unger led the Mustang program in the transition into the Lone Star Conference, the most competitive and largest in NCAA Division II (18 members). She turned the program into a Lone Star contender, leading the team from one to 10 wins, marking the first time that the program won in double-digits since joining the league.
She had a player earn All-Conference honors in each of her four seasons and had her team lead the conference and reach eighth in Division II in scoring defense during the 2018-19 season. In four seasons, her teams had a cumulative GPA of 3.3, 26 reach the Academic President's List (GPA above 3.7), and 19 reaching the Academic Dean's List (GPA above 3.3).
Unger joined WNMU from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith where she was Assistant Women's Basketball Coach and Head Women's Cross Country Coach for three seasons.
Unger helped the team to back-to-back 20-win seasons on the basketball court. During the 2014-15 season, UAFS reached the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned the team's first national tournament victory (68-65 over Colorado Mesa). She assisted Head Coach Louis Whorton, who was named Heartland Coach of the Year in 2014-15. As head cross country coach, her team hosted and developed the first home meet in program history. During her first season, the program won its first meet.
Before arriving at UAFS she was the Graduate Assistant Coach for her alma mater, the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, during the 2012-13 season. The team went 21-8, winning the Heartland Conference regular-season title. She helped coach the Heartland Player of the and two first-team All-Conference players. Unger assisted Head Coach Jerome Willis, who was named Heartland Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-13.
Unger played for four years for the UTPB women's basketball program. She was named the team MVP in 2012, along with being named to the All-Heartland Conference Team, and won the program's first Heartland Conference Championship in 2011. She holds the Heartland Conference and the UTPB record for most career three-pointers and holds the single-season record as well.
