Matadors Fall at #4 UCLA, 3-0
9/13/2021 8:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---Fourth-ranked UCLA downed CSUN Women's Soccer (1-7-0) 3-0 on Monday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Kacie Garrity led the Matadors with two shots on the night while eight others also collected a shot. In net, freshman Elizabeth Bornhauser tallied five saves in her third start of the season.
UCLA finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. The Matadors though had a slight shot lead in the second half at 7-6. The Bruins also posted a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. CSUN was whistled for 10 fouls in the match compared to UCLA's seven.
FIRST HALF
The nationally-ranked Bruins came out firing quickly at kickoff as Reilyn Turner missed wide of the net in the fifth minute. About 20 seconds later, UCLA would have its first score of the game when Olivia Athens set up Mia Fishel for a goal. The Matadors would have to withstand a barrage of offensive attacks in the early going and stood tall in many instances. Bornhauser collected her first save on a Turner attempt in the 19th minute then CSUN's defense posted a team save on a Turner header a minute later. After another Matador team save, Bornhauser stopped a shot in the 25th minute.
UCLA's pressure broke through moments later as Turner had her shot deflected away by Bornhauser but a second attempt found the netting to put UCLA ahead 2-0. The Matadors would keep battling throughout the half, looking to get back into the game. Cora Willcot and Gabriela Robles each put shots on goal in the period while Briana Rios had a shot blocked by the Bruin defense. Meanwhile, after UCLA's second goal, the Matador defense held the home team to a single shot attempt, which was blocked, over the final minutes of the half.
SECOND HALF
Out of the intermission, the Matadors continued to pressure the UCLA defense with a pair of early shot attempts. Ashley Cruz would miss wide of the net before Ashly Torres put a shot on frame that was saved by goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy. Bornhauser added to her save tally with another stop on an attack from Fishel but Athens would notch the Bruins' third goal a minute later on a diving header.
Trailing by three goals, the Matadors would gain the advantage in shot attempts for the period as the half progressed. Brzykcy halted a shot attempt from Cindy Arteaga and Brooke Mobeck while Christiane Sundstrom also missed wide of the netting. Garrity had two late looks in the final seconds including an attempt that went on frame but could not find the goal for the Matadors.
GAME NOTES
Robles was the only Matador field player to play the full 90 minutes while Garrity played the second-most minutes at 75.
The Bruins are the Matadors' third top-25 ranked team they have played already this season. CSUN has also played four games against Pac-12 Conference teams during non-conference play and will play a fifth on Sunday when it visits USC.
Monday's match was the Matadors' first game against UCLA since the 2013 season. The Bruins have won all six matches they have played this season and have shut out five-straight opponents.
UP NEXT
The Matadors return home for the first time in 24 days on Thursday when they host UC San Diego in a non-conference game. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call. An audio stream will also air at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
