UCSD Edges CSUN 2-1 in Non-Conference Action
9/16/2021 7:43:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A goal in the 59th minute propelled UC San Diego to a 2-1 victory over CSUN (1-8-0) in a non-conference match on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Cora Willcot scored her first goal of the season while Elizabeth Bornhauser racked up six saves.
The Tritons outshot the Matadors 16-6 in the match and led 8-3 in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went the Tritons' way at 13-1. CSUN was whistled for eight fouls while UCSD had three fouls.
FIRST HALF
The Tritons posted three shots in the opening seven minutes of play with the CSUN defense blocking away one attempt while Bornhauser stopped another. UCSD would drive up the field where a costly CSUN foul resulted in a penalty kick. Kennedy Carter took the kick and found the net, just out of the reach of a diving Bornhauser, to give the Tritons the early 1-0 lead.
The Matadors were held without a shot until the 18th minute when Alyssa Aguilar missed wide from outside the box. Moments later, Bornhauser thwarted a shot attempt from Caitlin McCarthy, which gave CSUN an opportunity to go back on the attack. The Matadors pushed up the field where a long pass from Sadie Armijo to Christiane Sundstrom down the sideline would lead to a Matador scoring opportunity. Sundstrom delivered a cross through the box to Willcot who headed the ball in to tie the game at 1-1.
CSUN withstood 10 corner kick attempts from the Tritons while Bornhauser racked up four saves in the first 45 minutes to help keep UCSD off the scoreboard. Ava D'Arcangelo missed her team's final shot attempt in the 43rd minute as the game went into the break squared at 1-1.
SECOND HALF
Bornhauser picked up two quick saves to start the half with the second shot attempt coming off the foot of Carter in the 57th minute. However, two minutes later, Carter benefited from a well-executed cross from Michelle Baddour to punch in her second goal of the match from less than 10 yards away. UCSD pressured the CSUN defense with seven total shot attempts over the final 45 minutes including registering three more corner kicks. Despite the wide variety of set pieces for UCSD, the Matadors were able to keep the ball out of net each time.
The Matadors looked for the equalizer over the final 30-plus minutes but could not break through against a stingy Triton defense. Sophie Yanez missed wide of the net early in the half while goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald saved Ashley Cruz's attempt in the 87th minute.
GAME NOTES
Willcot became the ninth different Matador this season to record a goal. She has now scored three career goals for CSUN in 31 matches. Sundstrom, who assisted Willcot on the goal, now leads the team with three points on the year.
The trio of Erin Anderson, Dayne Wagner and Sami Alarcon played the full 90 minutes on the backline while Ashly Torres came off the bench and logged 76 minutes. Yanez finished with a team-high two shot attempts.
