USC Pulls Away Late to Hand CSUN 4-0 Defeat
9/19/2021 3:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-9-0) fell to USC 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at Soni McAlister Field. The Matadors trailed by a goal until the 70th minute but surrendered three goals within a six-minute span, which proved to be too much to overcome. Amanda Delgado and Elizabeth Bornhauser each picked up two saves for the Matadors.
The Trojans outshot the Matadors 28-6 and 8-3 in shots on goal while USC also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. CSUN was whistled for 11 fouls compared to the Trojans who had five fouls. Sami Alarcon saw the yellow card in the 26th minute.
FIRST HALF
It would be the Matadors who recorded the first shot attempt in the early stages of the game. On a drive up the field, Angelica Claiborne delivered an 18-yard attempt that nearly snuck into the left post but goalkeeper Anna Smith deflected the ball out of bounds. Out of a corner kick, Ashly Torres had her shot blocked by the Trojan defense.
After the two early shots, the Trojans took over offensively and pressured the CSUN defense over the course of the period. With USC threatening, Delgado looked to be up for the test as she made an early save in the 17th minute. Delgado would also break up several Trojan scoring chances by reading the field. USC though broke through the CSUN defense in the 20th minute when the duo of Penelope Hocking and Aaliyah Farmer set up Jada Talley for the first goal of the game. Delgado and CSUN would rebound to shut out the Trojans for the remainder of the half, withstanding eight more shot attempts before intermission.
SECOND HALF
CSUN continued to remain close with USC over the first 20 minutes of the second period. Bornhauser took over for Delgado in goal at halftime and survived seven more Trojan shot attempts to start the period. CSUN would force a turnover in the 69th minute leading to an Alexis White attempt from the left side but Smith made a clean two-handed save in front of the USC net. Just one minute later, the Trojans went back on the attack resulting in its second goal. After CSUN broke up a cross inside its box, Hocking regained possession with room on top where she hit the right corner of the netting.
The Trojans wasted little time, scoring just 69 seconds after the Hocking goal. Off a CSUN turnover at midfield, Brooklyn Courtnail passed ahead to Hannah White in an open field. White forced Bornhauser out from her post and dribbled to her right to score into an open net. The Trojans added another insurance goal in the 76th minute as Julia Gomez beat the CSUN defense for a score from 12 yards out. The Matadors were held to one shot over the final 20-plus minutes with Gabriela Robles taking the final attempt in the 83rd minute.
GAME NOTES
The trio of Dayne Wagner, Alarcon and Robles played the full 90 minutes while Briana Rios logged 89 minutes. Claiborne, White and Alyssa Aguilar all had a shot on goal. Sunday's starting lineup was the Matadors' 10th different starting 11 of the season.
UP NEXT
CSUN now sets its sights on Big West Conference play next week. The Matadors begin the league season with a Thursday night road match at Hawai'i with kickoff set for 10 p.m. PST. The game will air on ESPN+.
