GAME ONE RECAP
It would be a back-and-forth battle between CSUN and California Baptist in the morning match but the Lancers would get a late go-ahead goal to spoil the Matadors' season opener.
The Matadors held an early 2-1 lead in the first quarter after goals from Anna Pal and Telek but the Lancers ended the period with consecutive goals from Kira O'Donell and Jamie Hutton. CSUN put together a strong defensive effort in the second period, holding the Lancers scoreless over the eight-minute session. Telek evened the contest at the 3:19 mark then Valeria Martinez put the Matadors in front with a tally on a power play. Meghan Lopez picked up a late save to help CSUN lead 4-3 after two periods.
Hutton tied the match once more early in the third period before Telek notched her third goal of the match to put CSUN back in front with 3:23 left on the clock. A Matador turnover resulted in another CBU tally via Vicky Martinez as the match entered the fourth quarter deadlocked at 5-5.
The final period would contain a combined seven goals with the game decided in the final minutes. CBU scored three of the first four goals in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead but the Matadors would fight back with goals from Nicole Thomas and Sandhagen to tie up the match at 8-8. However, 17 seconds after Sandhagen's tally, CBU took the lead on another goal from Martinez. CSUN had two possessions in the final two minutes but could not find the back of the net.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Matadors were led by the combination of Telek and Sandhagen in game two against Concordia with the duo combining for all 11 goals to help CSUN pick up its first win of the season.
Sandhagen netted two goals to start the Matador offense early in the first period before Telek scored on a power play to give CSUN a 3-1 edge. Telek later scored again at the 6:55 mark of the second period. The Eagles would battle back into the match, scoring three consecutive times including once on a penalty shot from Madison Ravelo. In the final two minutes of the second quarter, Telek and Josie Miller hit the netting as the score remained even at 5-5.
The teams traded goals in the third period with the Matadors holding four separate leads but the Eagles tied the score each time including with 23 seconds on the clock when Emily Tucker connected. Telek and Sandhagen each scored two goals in the third period and the tandem would be called upon late in the fourth period for CSUN. Ravelo broke a 9-9 tie in the opening minute of the final stanza before Telek tied the game up for the seventh time at the six-minute mark. The Eagles earned a power play moments later but the Matador defense stood tall, setting the stage for Sandhagen to break the tie on the ensuing possession.
Goalkeeper Piper McCulloch picked up a pair of saves in the fourth quarter while the Matadors withstood a late shot from Concordia that hit off the post to hang on for an 11-10 win.
CSUN Goals: Telek (6), Sandhagen (5)
Concordia Goals: Tucker (3), Ravelo (2), Tormey (2), Evezard, Miller, Stanard
CSUN Saves: McCulloch (6)
Concordia Saves: Cava (13)
GAME NOTES
Telek became the eighth Matador in team history to score at least six goals in a single match in the win over Concordia. Her six goals are also one short of a CSUN record. Thomas, Martinez and Pal all scored goals on Saturday in their first career matches with CSUN.
Saturday's games were the Matadors' first spring matches in 693 days after the program opted out of playing last season.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"It's hard to put into words how great it felt to compete again, although the results weren't what we were hoping for [against CBU], I'm proud of the effort our young squad showed."
"It was nice to see us bounce back in the second game and compete at the level we know we are capable of. Concordia threw some different offensive sets at us and we made the adjustments needed to win."
UP NEXT
CSUN competes at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, from Feb. 12-13. The Matadors will play two games each day and their opponents are yet to be announced.
