Matadors Split on Day One of Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif.---CSUN Water Polo (2-2) went 1-1 to start the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Saturday. The Matadors dropped the opener to No. 6 Hawai'i 18-3 before finishing up the day with a 13-10 triumph over No. 23 Marist. Anna Pal notched five combined goals between the two games while Kylee Jansen and Dorottya Telek each had four combined goals. Meghan Lopez played in both matches at goalkeeper and posted 15 saves.
GAME ONE RECAP
The sixth-ranked Rainbow Wahine came out firing in the first quarter, scoring six unanswered goals to take control at the start. The Matadors would fall behind 7-0 before cracking the scoring column at the 4:58 mark of the second quarter on a tally from Telek. Anna Pal and Carly Bockstahler each also scored for CSUN in the period, but Hawai'i scored five total in the eight-minute session and would take an 11-3 lead into the third quarter.
Over the final two periods, Hawai'i held the Matadors without a goal as the lead swelled to 18-3 late in the fourth period. A total of nine Rainbow Wahine players scored in the match as the trio of Emma Van Rossum, Alba Bonamusa Boix and Jordan Wedderburn had three goals apiece.

GAME TWO RECAP
Jansen and Telek powered the CSUN offense in the first quarter, scoring two apiece but Marist kept pace scoring three of its own including a last second goal to pull to within 4-3.
After the Red Foxes tied the match in the opening minute of the second, Madeline Schultz gave Marist its first lead of the afternoon. CSUN tied the match on a Pal goal, but Marist scored two of the next three goals to take a 7-6 lead after two quarters.
Pal pulled the Matadors even to begin the scoring in the third period, however, Marist responded with a tally from Victoria Padilla. The seesaw third period continued with Marist taking two more leads only to see the Matadors respond with a tying goal each time. The trio of Pal, Telek and Jansen each added to their scoring lines in the third quarter as the game was deadlocked at 9-9 heading to the final eight minutes.
Shelby Hovanesian opened up the fourth quarter with her first career goal and CSUN added another from Pal to take an 11-9 lead. Jansen then scored her fourth goal of the match with 4:39 remaining that gave the Matadors a three-goal lead. CSUN's defense took over in the fourth quarter, holding Marist to a single tally, which came at the three-minute mark. Valeria Martinez picked up an insurance goal with 2:46 to play as the Matadors withstood a power play on the next possession before holding on the rest of the way.

Lopez played the full 32 minutes against Marist, notching 11 saves. In addition to her four goals, Pal also had four assists versus Marist. Jansen made her season debut on Saturday, playing in both matches after missing the team's opening weekend.
