NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – CSUN senior Nicole Nevarez had a career-high 21 kills but visiting Cal Poly stormed back after dropping the opening set to top the Matadors in four sets Saturday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Nevarez hit .378 on 45 attacks to go with nine digs and four blocks but the Mustangs handed CSUN (6-10, 1-3 Big West) its first home loss of the season by the score of 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12.
KEY STATISTICS
• Nevarez was the only Matador in double figures as Taylor Hunter and Taylor Orshoff each added eight kills with Hunter hitting .353 on 17 swings. Lauryn Anderson added seven kills on .385 hitting.
• Carisa Barron had 25 assists, eight digs and six blocks while Emily Sparks notched her fourth double-double of the season with 16 assists and 11 digs.
• Freshman libero Breanna Mitchell had a match-high 19 digs as CSUN out-dug the Mustangs 59-52.
• Cal Poly, which hit .340 as a team, also had slight edges in aces (6-5) and blocks (9.0-7.0).

COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"I felt like we played great in set one and were still playing well deep into set two. We were trading punches with them until they pulled away in set three and then kind of dominated set four. We had them on their heels in the first set but Cal Poly is a very good team and we knew they would come back strong but we still had our chances. Nicole (Nevarez) had an unbelievable night and we've worked on expanding our range of shots and she did that tonight."
SET 1
The Matadors hit .441 in the opening set and led from start-to-finish. A Barron solo block opened up a 7-2 CSUN lead and the Matadors would lead 12-4 following an Orshoff kill. The CSUN lead grew to as many as 14 when a Nevarez kill gave the Matadors a 23-9 advantage. A 7-0 run by the visitors forced a CSUN timeout at 23-16 before an Orshoff kill ended the set.
SET 2
The Matadors trailed by three in the early going (9-6) before rallying back to tie the score at 12-12 following a Sparks ace. Cal Poly would lead by as many as four (19-15) before CSUN again rallied to pull within one at 20-19 following an Anderson ace. After the visitors led 23-20, the Matadors staged a final rally to save one set point at 24-23 before Hunter's attack was stuffed by Cal Poly giving the Mustangs a 25-23 win.
SETS 3-4
Cal Poly would hit a combined .301 over the final two sets while limiting the Matadors to a collective .133 clip in taking the final two sets by the scores of 25-18 and 25-12.
The Matadors will return to the road next week as they travel to Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Long Beach State on Saturday.
