FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite career nights from Taylor Orshoff and Taylor Hunter, the CSUN women's volleyball dropped the final two sets in a five-set loss to Cal State Fullerton in a Big West match Friday night at Titan Gym.
Orshoff connected for a career-high 20 kills (.318) while Hunter added a career-high 17 kills on a season-high 22 swings to hit .727 but the Matadors slipped to 6-11 overall and 1-4 in The Big West following the 25-19, 9-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11 Fullerton win.
KEY STATISTICS
• Orshoff also added five digs and a pair of blocks while Hunter matched her season-high with six blocks (three solo) to go with three digs. Hunter (21.5) and Orshoff (21.0) combined for 42.5 of CSUN's 77.0 points in the match.
• Nicole Nevarez also reached double figures with 12 kills (.200) while adding a team-high 16 digs for fourth double-double of the season.

• Danielle Jefferies had a team-high 17 kills (.394) to lead Cal State Fullerton (9-4, 3-2 Big West).
COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"Offensively we're continuing to put up good numbers but we made too many mistakes on simple plays in the fourth and fifth sets tonight. Our passers really did a good job of getting Taylor (Hunter) one-on-one opportunities and she executed throughout the match. She really did a nice job of mixing up her shots."
SET 1
The Matadors got off to a slow start, trailing 7-1 after just eight points. Still down seven at 12-5, CSUN rallied behind an 8-5 run to pull within 17-13 following a Titan service error. That was as close as the Matadors would get down the stretch as Fullerton pulled away for the 25-19 win.
SET 2
After hitting .321 in the opening set, CSUN ramped it up to .458 in dominating set two. The Matadors turned the tables, outscoring the Titans 9-1 to open the set. An Orshoff kill gave CSUN a double-digit lead at 16-6 forcing a Fullerton timeout. The Matadors continued to extend the lead, leading by 14 (22-8) before winning by the final margin of 15 at 25-9.
SET 3
CSUN would carry its hot hitting into the third frame as the Matadors connected at a .375 clip. CSUN overcame an early 10-7 Titan lead as a Fullerton service error was followed by three straight Orshoff kills that put the Matadors in front 11-10. Orshoff connected twice more out of a timeout and CSUN would lead by as many as three (13-10). The Matadors forced another timeout leading 19-15 when the hosts would rally to within 21-19. But a Hunter kill pushed the lead back to three and the Matadors would close out a 25-22 win.
SET 4
Carrying a two sets to one lead into the fourth, the Matadors fell behind by four in the early going before rallying to take a 14-11 lead after a Nevarez kill. Another Orshoff kill kept the CSUN lead at four at 18-14 when the Titans engineered a 7-1 run to take back the lead 21-19. Orshoff's kill cut the lead to one but the hosts would close the set on a 4-2 run to take the set 25-22.
SET 5
A 3-0 Fullerton run snapped a 3-3 tie as the Matadors were forced into an early timeout in the final set. A Jeffries kill gave the Titans a four-point edge (8-4) before Fullerton opened up a five-point lead at 11-6. A pair of Barron kills and an Orshoff kill trimmed the deficit to 11-9 forcing a Titans timeout. A Julia Crawford kill out of the break pushed the lead back to three and despite CSUN closing to within two on a pair of occasions, the Titans would hold on for the 15-11 win.
The Matadors will stay on the road for a Saturday match at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach. First serve between the Matadors and Beach is scheduled for 7 p.m.
