Matadors Record Fourth Shutout of Season Against Cal Poly

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN recorded its fourth shutout of the season as the Matadors played Cal Poly to a 0-0 tie Wednesday night in Big West men's soccer action at Matador Soccer Field.
An evenly played first half in which both teams took three shots sent the clubs into halftime looking to break the seal. CSUN's Jack Rhead apparently scored in the 57th minute, putting back a Levin Gerhardt rebound, but the Matadors were whistled for offsides on the play. The play capped off a sequence that began with Michael Arrington having a shot saved by Gabe Penner.
The 61st minute saw Dylan Gonzalez's attempt turned away on the back line by a pair of Mustangs' defenders. The ricochet came out to Rhead who had the ball blocked by the Cal Poly defense. The Mustangs threatened in the 70th when Sean McTague went wide left in what turned out to be the only Cal Poly shot of the second half.
Jamar Ricketts had his shot blocked in the 83rd. The Matadors nearly scored at the 85:56 mark. Cal Poly's Erik Cabrera-Trujillo was called for a handball in front of Penner, resulting in a CSUN penalty kick opportunity. Ricketts' tried to go low and left on Penner, who read the opportunity correctly and made a save. The final shot of the night came with 2:21 to go as Gonzalez was left of the Mustangs' goal.
THE STATS
CSUN outshot Cal Poly 10-4, 4-1 on goal. Penner made three saves while Matadors' goalie Cooper Wenzel recorded a save on the lone Mustangs' shot on goal. CSUN held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks and 57-43 in time of possession. Cal Poly is 1-9-3, 1-1-3 in Big West matches.

"We were able to create offensive opportunities throughout the game. It was unfortunate that the goal was taken away from us. We missed the PK and that was the game."
NOTES
With four ties in which CSUN has played this season are the most for the Matadors in a season since 2016 (9-7-5)…CSUN and Cal Poly played for the 61st time since the series began in 1978…the Matadors lead the all-time series 31-19-11…CSUN played the Mustangs in Northridge for the first time since 2018.
