Matadors Travel to UC Irvine, Long Beach State This Week

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-12-1, 0-5-1) hits the road this week to face a pair of unbeaten teams in league play. The Matadors take on UC Irvine on Thursday at 7 p.m. before heading to Long Beach State for a Sunday match at 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors dropped a 1-0 decision to Hawai'i last Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN tied a season-high in shots (15) and would outshoot Hawai'i on the night (15-12), but the Rainbow Wahine hit the game-winning goal in the 49th minute. The loss spoiled a strong outing by CSUN's goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin, who recorded five saves. Freshmen Sami Kolin started on defense for the first time since Sept. 3 and played the full 90 minutes while fellow freshman Samantha Healy picked up a team save in what was her second appearance on the field this season. Another freshman, Yoshi Rubalcava, led the team in shots with five.
MATADOR HEADLINES
With four matches remaining on the regular season schedule, Cindy Arteaga tops the Big West in shots (56) and shots on goal (26) while she ranks tied for second in goals (6) and in third place in points (13). Ashley Cruz and Kacie Garrity are tied for 16th in The Big West with two assists. In goal, Hayden Mauldin is up to fourth place in saves with 53.
Aside from Arteaga, two other Matadors have hit the net this season as Cruz has two goals to go with six points while freshman Cassidy Imperial-Pham has one goal and three points.
Arteaga sits at nine career goals with the Matadors and a goal shy of becoming just the 14th Matador to score double digit goals in team history. She is currently third all-time in CSUN history in shots with 139 over her career.
Sixteen Matador newcomers have seen the field this season including 14 freshmen. A true freshman, Mauldin has started the last 10 matches in goal for CSUN, racking up 900 minutes to go with a 2.10 GAA. Imperial-Pham leads the first-year field players in minutes with 568 followed by Jackie Victorio with 550.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN has gone 11-11-4 against UC Irvine in the all-time series. The Anteaters evened the series with a 2-1 win earlier this season on Sept. 12 in a non-conference game. UCI scored in each half of the game while the Matadors hit the net in the 90th minute via a Cindy Arteaga penalty kick. The Anteaters have defeated the Matadors in three consecutive meetings. CSUN's last win over UCI came in 2019 (1-0 win in overtime) while its last win on the road in the series took place in 2016 (1-0).
Long Beach State leads CSUN 16-9-3 in the all-time series. The Beach have won two-straight matches over the Matadors, both of which took place in 2021 while CSUN has gone 1-7-2 over the last 10 meetings with Long Beach State. The Matadors have lost four of the last five at Long Beach State, which includes a 2017 draw, and seek their first win at George Allen Field since 2012 (1-0 win in overtime).
SCOUTING UC IRVINE
UCI has gone 5-3-6 overall this season with a 1-0-5 mark in Big West play. The Anteaters played to a 1-1 draw against Long Beach State last Sunday. The team has a 3-1-4 record at Anteater Stadium thus far in 2022. Entering this week, the reigning Big West champion is tied for fifth in the league standings with eight points. Head coach Scott Juniper is in his 16th year leading the program.
Destinee Manzo has four goals and a team-high 10 points while Desiree Mendoza has four goals and nine points. Sophie Gillies and Lilli Rask each have two goals. In total, 11 Anteaters have scored at least one goal this season. In net, Glo Hinojosa has posted a 0.86 GAA with 48 saves and six shutouts. As a team, UCI has allowed the least amount of goals of any Big West team with 12.
SCOUTING LONG BEACH STATE
Undefeated over their last five matches, the Beach have gone 4-4-5 and 3-0-2 in The Big West this season. In last week's competition, the Beach played to a 1-1 tie at UC Irvine. At George Allen Field, Long Beach State has registered a 3-3-4 record. The Beach are in first place in The Big West heading into the week with 11 points. Head coach Mauricio Ingrassia is in his 19th year leading the program.
Lena Silano tops The Big West in goals with nine to go with 22 points. Summer Laskey has four goals while Cherrie Cox has hit the net three times. Eight total players have scored at least one goal this season. Zora Standifer has a 0.89 GAA with 19 saves in six matches in net. As a team, LBSU leads The Big West with 21 goals scored.
