CSUN Drops 1-0 Decision at UC Irvine
10/13/2022 10:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to UC Irvine on Thursday at Anteater Stadium. Hayden Mauldin recorded two saves in front of the net. UCI would get the go-ahead goal in the 46th minute and hold on the rest of the way.
Â
Mauldin picked up her only save of the first half early in the match as she snagged a low shot from Erin Covey in the fifth minute. CSUN's defense would block a shot from Desiree Mendoza in the ninth minute and withstand back-to-back UCI corner kicks shortly thereafter.
CSUN looked to break the scoreless tie in the 17th minute when Kacie Garrity took the ball down the left side before crossing the ball into the box. UCI goalkeeper Glo Hinojosa came off her line to break up the play, but Ashley Cruz got to the ball and had a look at the net. Hinojosa would recover to make a save and collect another save seconds later off the foot of Cindy Arteaga.
Arteaga had another solid look at the net in the 21st minute on a breakaway, but Hinojosa was able to track the shot and hit the ball out of bounds. Yoshi Rubalcava missed wide in the 37th minute while Arteaga kicked high above the crossbar late in the half. CSUN picked up another defensive block on a Sophie Gillies shot in the final minute of the period.
In the second half, UCI broke the scoreless tie with an early strike in the 46th minute. Shortly after Mauldin was knocked down while attempting to dive on a loose ball, the Anteaters went back on the attack. Aislynn Crowder would find Alyssa Moore with a through ball in front of the goal. Moore got one touch on the ball before hitting the back of the net to give UCI a 1-0 lead.
Trailing by a goal, CSUN would flip the script and control the pace in an effort to even the match. Following a missed shot from Moore in the 66th minute, the Anteaters tallied just one shot the rest of the way while the Matadors posted six shots.
After the 72nd minute mark, Arteaga had two shots saved by Hinojosa including an attempt from the top of the box on a free kick. In perhaps the closest call of the second half, Arteaga struck the crossbar from 18 yards out in the 83rd minute. Arteaga took the Matadors' final shot of the night in the 89th minute, but the attempt was offline.

Cindy Arteaga finished with eight shots and four on goal in 77 minutes. The tandem of Angelica Claiborne, Ashly Torres, Kacie Garrity and Sami Kolin played the full 90 minutes. Jackson made her first career start in the match and played 40 minutes.
Â
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"I couldn't be prouder of this team and of the players that stepped up today. We executed the game plan, we defended and played for 90 minutes. That's what we've been asking of them and they did exactly that. Â
Â
We're rebuilding the program and it takes time. I know they feel like they're getting better. The results are one goal games. We're going to continue to fight and finish out the season and try to get three points in the next couple games."
