LONG BEACH, Calif.---Cindy Arteaga netted her seventh goal of the season but CSUN would fall to Long Beach State 4-1 on Sunday at George Allen Field. Arteaga's strike came in the 68th minute of play. Taylor Thames recorded nine saves in front of the net.
Arteaga took the first shot of the day for both teams in the third minute when she missed wide right from the left side. Thames would notch her first save two minutes later with a dive to her right following a shot from Lena Silano. Moments later, Thames made two impressive saves, one of which off the foot of Elysia Laramie from short range as the Matador goalkeeper made a strong two-handed stop.
Silano tested Thames again in the 13th minute with two near goals. On a breakaway, Silano went one on one with Thames before having her shot saved. The ball would bounce back in front of the goal where Silano put up a second shot, but Thames quickly got back to her feet and made another diving save.
Later in the half, the Beach would finally break through with a goal that just went inches inside the goal line. On the play, Cherrie Cox took the ball through the middle of the box and passed to her left to Summer Laskey, who sent a shot that was deflected by Thames off the crossbar. The ball then bounced once inside the goal line before Thames could clear the play.
From there, the Beach continued to apply pressure on the CSUN defense. In the 39th minute, the Beach struck again when passes from Maddy Perez and Cox set up Silano in front of the net for the goal. Three minutes later, a counter attack up the middle of the field would lead to Cox scoring on a one-on-one with Thames.
A minute after halftime, the Beach went on the attack once again. A long pass up the field to Silano resulted in a collision with Thames in front of the goal. CSUN was whistled for the foul, giving Silano an opportunity to score on the penalty kick for a 4-0 Long Beach State lead.
Trailing by four, CSUN continued to battle throughout the second half. In the 63rd minute, CSUN nearly came away with a goal when Kacie Garrity crossed the ball inside the box. Goalkeeper Zora Standifer deflected the ball, but could not retain possession. Cailey Jackson picked up the loose ball and sent a shot through a couple of defenders including Standifer, however, a Beach defender made a save on the goal line.
CSUN would finally crack the scoring column in the 68th minute, shortly after Jackson was fouled on the 18 yard line. Arteaga took the free kick and deposited a shot off a Beach defender and into the left corner of the net.
The Matadors though could not get any closer the rest of the way. Jackson took the Matadors' final shot of the night, which went wide, in the 69th minute of play.
GAME NOTES
The Beach (6-4-5, 5-0-2 Big West) outshot the Matadors (2-14-1, 0-7-1 Big West) 24-12 and held a 13-5 edge in shots on goal. LBSU also had 10 of the 12 corner kicks on the night. A total of 19 fouls were called with CSUN whistled for 10 of them. Riley Goossen-Brown was shown a yellow card in the 43rd minute.
Cindy Arteaga's goal was her 10th of her career as she became the 14th Matador to ever score at least 10 times. Her seventh goal of the season put her in an eighth-place tie with four others on the single-season goal scoring list in team history.
Taylor Thames made her first appearance since Sept. 1 and her first career start against a league opponent. The quartet of Angelica Claiborne, Ashley Cruz, Gabriela Robles and Arteaga played the full 90 minutes.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"We were very disorganized in the back in the first half. We looked sluggish and tired. In the second half, we were better, but it was a little too late. We will rest, regroup and prep for our next game."
UP NEXT
CSUN wraps up its home slate next Sunday with a Senior Day match with UC San Diego. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
