NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – After dropping a pair of tough five-set matches on the road last weekend, the CSUN women's volleyball team bounced back to claim a five-set win over UC Davis in a Big West match Friday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
The Matadors (7-12, 2-5 Big West) had another stellar blocking effort, recording 21.0 team blocks in the 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 27-29, 17-15 win. After posting 20.0 team blocks at Long Beach State on Saturday, the Matadors surpassed that mark against the Aggies, posting the four-best effort in program history.
Setter Carisa Baron had a huge night for CSUN, posting her second triple-double of the season with team-highs of 16 kills and 29 assists to go with 14 digs and six blocks. Barron would hit a career-best .412 on a career-high 34 swings to highlight an impressive all-around match.

COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"We've been losing close all year so to win as close one seems appropriate. We made too many errors and struggled to get kills in sets three and four and to get 10 kills in the fifth set was big for us."
SET 1
The Matadors hit .250 or better to take each of the first two sets by the 25-22 score. After leading by as many as four early on, the visitors rallied to tie the score at 11-11. Consecutive blocks by Hunter and Juric forced an Aggie timeout after CSUN pushed the lead back to three at 15-12. But a 5-2 UCD run again knotted the score, this time at 17-17. A Barron kill gave the Matadors an 18-17 lead and CSUN would not surrender the lead the rest of the way.
SET 2
The Matadors would also take an early 7-4 lead in the second set only to watch the Aggies again rally to tie things at 9-9. With CSUN clinging to a 13-11 lead, the Matadors would engineer a 6-3 run to open up a 19-14 advantage following an Orshoff kill. UC Davis would answer with a 5-1 run to close to within 20-19 and the Aggies would also trail 23-22 when a Nevarez solo stuff and an Aggie hitting error on set point gave CSUN the two-set lead.
SET 3
The Aggies would out-hit the Matadors .244 to .149 in taking the third set 25-21. After a Juric kill pulled the Matadors within one at 8-7, the visitors would extend the lead to 13-8 following a 5-1 run. Down by five at 19-14, CSUN would rally back to within 21-19 after a Nevarez kill. But UC Davis would outscore the Matadors 4-2 down the stretch to take the 25-21 win.
SET 4
The fourth set proved to be the tightest of the match as the teams traded the lead eight times while playing to a pair of ties. A solo block by Orshoff opened up a comfortable 10-4 lead for the Matadors and CSUN was still in good shape leading 16-10 midway through the set. A 4-0 run by the Aggies forced a Matador timeout at 16-14 before a kill and an ace from Barron pushed the lead back to four. CSUN maintained a four-point lead at 19-15 before the visitors used a 7-2 run to knot the score at 22-22 on a Makena Morrison ace. An Orshoff kill gave CSUN match point at 24-23 but the Aggies would get a kill to save one match point before also two others at 25-24 and 26-25. With the score tied at 26-26, Light's kill gave UC Davis set point at 27-26 which was spoiled by an Aggie service error. But Light connected again and Lana Radakovic followed up with a kill sending the Aggies to the 29-27 win.
SET 5
Neither team hit particularly well in the race to 15 but CSUN managed 10 kills to seven for UC Davis. After the Aggies got out to a 3-1 start, the Matadors battled back to tie the score at 5-5 when Anderson put up a solo block. UC Davis would lead by two at 8-6 and 7-9 before kills by Juric and Nevarez and a block from Barron and Hunter gave CSUN its first lead at 10-9. Two more points out of UCD timeout pushed the lead to 12-9 before the Aggies rallied to tie the score at 13-13 when Orshoff's attack was stuffed by the Aggie block. The score remained tied at 14-14 and 15-15 when Anderson and Barron teamed up to stuff an Aggie attack and Anderson connected for a kill on match point sending the Matadors to the 17-15 win.
The Matadors continue their three-match homestand Saturday hosting UC Riverside at 5 p.m.
