NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – After a lengthy five-set win over UC Davis on Friday, the CSUN women's volleyball team had a quick turnaround Saturday and was dealt a 3-1 loss by visiting UC Riverside Saturday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Sophomore Carisa Barron had another huge night for the Matadors (7-13, 2-6 Big West) in the loss, posting her second triple-double in as many nights. Barron put down a career-high 19 kills to lead all hitters in the match while also posting 22 assists, 10 digs and two blocks.
KEY STATISTICS
• Taylor Orshoff also reached double figures in kills for CSUN with 12 while hitting .310 on 29 swings while Magdalena Juric chipped in nine kills (.259).
• Nicole Nevarez added eight kills (.212), nine digs, two blocks and one ace and Taylor Hunter posted seven kills (.267) and a team-high three blocks.
• Emily Sparks notched a season-high 25 assists to go with 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. CSUN libero Breanna Mitchell led all players in the match with 22 digs despite the Matadors being out-dug 72-68 by the Highlanders.
• UC Riverside hit a near season-high .333 to CSUN's .291 while the Matadors had seven aces (two each from Mitchell and Layla Cederlind) to UCR's three.
• Isabella Scarlett was one of four Highlander hitters in double figures with a team-high 18 kills (.552) as UCR improved to 4-13 overall and 2-6 in The Big West.
COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"I thought Riverside played great and I also thought this was a bit of a trap game for us. But having said that this was a bit of a trap game is absolutely no excuse for getting out-hustled and out-desired and we got out-hustled and out-desired tonight and we got embarrassed."
SET 1
The visitors came out on fire offensively, hitting .436 to CSUN's .282. The Matadors opened up a 10-6 lead following a Sparks ace before CSUN would lead by as many as five (12-7) after a Barron kill. But a Delaney Tate kill would fuel a 9-1 UCR run that put the Highlanders in front 16-13. The visitors would extend the lead to four at 19-15 before winning the opening set by five at 25-20.
SET 2
UCR continued to hit well into set two, connecting at a .371 clip to win 25-18. After a Nevarez kill tied the score 2-2, the Highlanders outscored the Matadors 7-2 over the next nine points to lead 9-4. CSUN would score three straight to pull within 9-7 following a Mitchell ace. Still down three at 14-11, a solo block by Nevarez would cap a two-point Matador run that trimmed the lead to one. But CSUN would get no closer the remainder of the set as the visitors pulled away for the seven-point win.
SET 3
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors pulled away at the midpoint of the third set to win 25-19. Leading by one at 8-7, CSUN used a Juric kill to go on a 4-0 run to open up a 12-7 advantage. The Matadors maintained a five-point lead at 17-12 before leading by as many as six after a Lauryn Anderson kill. CSUN also led by six at 22-16 before taking the set by the same six-point margin following another Barron kill.
SET 4
Looking to force a fifth set, the Matadors overcame an early four-point deficit (11-7) to tie the score at 14-14 when Orshoff connected for a kill. Mitchell's second ace sent the set to the media timeout with the Matadors leading 15-14 before CSUN pushed the lead to two following a Barron kill. The Matadors would hold a two-point lead at 18-16 and again at 23-21 when they were outscored 3-1 as UCR forged a 24-24 tie. The Matadors would save a pair of match points at 25-24 and 26-25 before a pair of UCR kills ended the match.
The Matadors conclude their three-match homestand this Tuesday, hosting UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
